West J Honors Retirees at Annual End of Year Luncheon

Class of 2022 Retirees!
Garry High -- CTE Computer Engineering
Mr. High began teaching in 2005 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He also taught at Independence High School for 13 years where he taught math and engineering. Mr. High created an Academy of Engineering at Independence High School before coming to West Johnston in 2019. Mr. High plans to enjoy retirement as he helps his wife take care of their grandchildren at "Papa Preschool."
Debbie Burns -- CTE Career Development Coordinator
Mrs. Burns began teaching in 2006 at West Johnston High School as a business teacher before taking on the role of Career Development Coordinator. West J is Mrs. Burns' only school. Mrs. Burns plans to enjoy retirement caning and finishing rockers until December then she will enjoy being Grandma!
Angela Meadows -- Spanish
Mrs. Meadows began her teaching career in 1993 at Norlina Elementary School in Warren County. Before coming to West Johnston in 2006, she also taught in Hoke County Schools. She has been at West for 16 years. Mrs. Meadows is looking forward to relaxing, spending time with family, and traveling. She may even start a second career, but she hasn't decided on that yet.
Betty Jo Lewis -- Exceptional Children
Mrs. Lewis began teaching in 1974 in Nottoway County in Virginia at Blackstone Junior High School. She also taught at Blackstone Intermediate with 5th graders and Nottoway Middle School, teaching all subjects. Mrs. Lewis began teaching at West Johnston in 2004. With her 30 years in Virginia and her 18 years in North Carolina, Mrs. Lewis has taught for a total of 48 years. She is looking forward to spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, and enjoying time at the beach.
Melinda Honeycutt -- CTE and Science
Mrs. Honeycutt began teaching in 1988 at Harnett Central High School. She has been teaching science and CTE courses at West Johnston High School since 2003. Mrs. Honeycutt is retiring at the same time as her husband, Eric Honeycutt. She plans to spend retirement at the beach with her friends and family.
Brenda Woolard -- English
Mrs. Woolard started her teaching career in 1990 at Arndt Middle School in Hickory, North Carolina. She has only taught at two schools her entire career. She joined the staff at West Johnston in January 2003. She plans to enjoy retirement raising puppies, traveling, and enjoying life!
Mark McGee -- Math
Mr. McGee began teaching in 1993 at Burlington Williams High School where he was a math teacher, athletic trainer, and JV baseball coach. He moved to South Johnston in 1995 where he continued to coach JV baseball and coach football. Mr. McGee was one of the original staff at West J in 2002 as a math teacher and baseball coach. He plans to spend his retirement enjoying life!
Brian Buchanan -- Math
Mr. Buchanan began teaching in 1993 at Fike High School. He also taught at Smithfield Middle School where he taught 6th grade language arts and social studies in addition to math. Mr. Buchanan opened West Johnston as one of the original staff members and served as department chair of the math department the entire 20 years. He is looking forward to spending time with family as he retires from West Johnston High School.
Eric Honeycutt -- CTE Agriculture
Mr. Honeycutt started his teaching career at Jordan Matthews High School in 1986. He also taught at South Johnston High School before helping open West Johnston High School in 2002 as a member of our first staff. He has served as an FFA advisor and has cooked and served many meals for students and staff throughout our 20 years with him. Mr. Honeycutt refuses to slow down with retirement. He will continue to work every day.
