Dear Parents and Staff

I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day - there, I’ve said it, and many of you will be thinking “What a cold-hearted man”. It’s not that I’m completely against the idea of having a day when we do something special for those we love, however, we shouldn’t need a card company to remind us to do this on a particular day. Any day, or perhaps every day, should be when we show our love for those close to us and having someone or tradition dictate when that should be doesn’t sit well with me. That said, when I finally get home this evening after a couple of meetings, I will be sure to make my wife fully aware of just how special she is.

For those who have a far more romantic view of Valentine’s Day than mine my favourite legend of the origins of the day contends that Valentine was a priest who served in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the third century. Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers so he outlawed marriage. Valentine, realising the injustice of this decree, continued to marry young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered he was put to death, thus becoming a martyr for his faith and the inspiration for the sale of millions of floral arrangements throughout the world each year.

ASSEMBLY

The first of our Merit Assemblies will be held tomorrow morning when we recognise children who have been working particularly hard over the past two weeks. We will also be announcing our Faction Captains and Library Monitors and commissioning all of our Year Six students as Leaders for 2019.

YEAR SIX CAMP

There is high excitement in the Year Six classes with their school camp commencing next Monday. The teachers have coordinated an excellent programme that will be challenging for the children educationally, physically and emotionally. I look forward to joining the campers from Wednesday to Friday of next week and sharing in the many wonderful experiences that are planned.

PARKING….AGAIN!

I spoke to the City of Belmont Rangers who were outside our school this morning. They have informed me that they will be regularly patrolling around our school to ensure that vehicles are parked legally. I am not sure if they have issued any infringements yet but they have advised that they will be doing so in the near future if parents continue to park illegally. Please ensure that you:

In addition to the above I remind parents that there is only a Left Turn option when leaving the small carpark area on Oswell Street.

ADVANCED NOTICE

I hope all parents have noticed on the Term Calendar that Tuesday 5 March is a professional development day for the staff and children do not attend school on this day. It is the Tuesday after the Labor Day long weekend so perhaps, if you’re going away, you could extend your stay and avoid the traffic by heading home on the Tuesday.

Share the library love…

Students were invited to come to the library and share their love of stories by creating their own shadow puppet theatre. They made their own puppets and enjoyed hearing each other’s stories. Due to the high interest in this activity, we will continue this in week 3.

Love was found in the library!!

During the week students came to the library to do something they love in the library. Students played lego, uno, twister, chess, guess who and read great books. We hope that they loved coming to the library and that they created special memories of this unique and loved space in our community.
