MRSD Director of Food Service Garth Petracca meets with Student Leaders
Mr. Garth Petracca came into our Peer Leadership class to speak with us about student feedback about school lunch. Mr. Petracca informed us that he is in charge of the menus and ordering, along with the many regulations that are out of his control. He told us that he is open to all suggestions from students and willing to make anything as long as it met the regulations that he is forced to obey. Students in our class suggested larger proportions as well as bringing back ice cream and slushies which we previously had access to in elementary and middle school. Other suggestions included continuing the chicken nuggets and tater tots and starting to make grilled cheese. Another concern brought on by our class was the quality of the pizza that students are given. Mr. Petracca suggested trying out different brands each day and having the students give their feedback on what their favorite is. The final idea that was brought up regarded the athletes of our school. Many students participate in sports and other after school activities that require them to stay at school for hours without going home or to purchase food somewhere. An idea that we had was giving students access to the cafeteria so they are able to eat something while they are stuck here after school.
Regarding the recommendation letters written by the eighth graders, seniors requested that they get the same opportunity considering that they have been in the school the longest and have the most feedback to give.
In order to give Mr. Petracca feedback on what the students would like to see in the cafeteria in the near future, over the next few weeks Shannon and I plan on asking students who regularly buy breakfast and lunch first. We also intend on asking the juniors and seniors in the school what they would enjoy, considering that they have been here the longest and have experienced much of the options from the past as well. Prior to midterms we will be emailing Mr. Petracca the results of our findings to help him with his purchasing and menu.
Sincerely,
Lily MacAskill & Shannon Smith (Co-Chairs)
Thank you Mr. Malone!
Brian Butcher- "You Are Important" Honor of the Week
Ms. Ferro in the main office was helping a student and that specific student needed a chromebook to complete a task. She asked a group of students in the area if any of them was willing to lend theirs to a fellow schoolmate, and Brian offered! His chromebook wasn't even visible, so when none of the others offered, he didn't have to say anything... but instead he reached for his chromebook in his backpack and said "I will!"
Thank you Brian- well done!
MRHS Ceremony Honoring Jordan Fisher
Every month, science, technology and engineering (STE) students are selected by their teachers to be acknowledged for their commitment to learning. The "STE Bright Lights" to be recognized during the month of January are:
8th grade - Jane Howard
Jane Howard has been a star in science class over the last couple of weeks. Students were tasked with the challenge of building a working toy or game that demonstrates Newton's Three Laws of Motion. Jane has shown incredible independence, determination, and focus on this project and her positive attitude and work ethic should be commended. Great job Jane! ~Ms. Adriana Picariello
9th grade - Shannen Holbrook
“Shannon Holbrook's motivation, focus, and determination to reach for the stars as a self-directed learner truly distinguish her from peers in an accelerated class that includes many strong students. While working very well as a leader and collaborator in class and in lab work, Shannon is a positive force that benefits those around her as much as her own education. She's consistently and fully engaged in class, and is often one of the first to provide insight into problem-challenges, as a result of the work invested and being highly 'tuned-in' during class.” ~Mr. Peter Saltsman
10th grade - Marie Zavadova
“Throughout the year, Marie has demonstrated a dedication to academic excellence and a genuine interest in learning biological science.” ~Mr. Dustan Burns
11th grade - Cody Doyle
“Cody's enthusiasm and desire to excel in advanced woodworking techniques is evident in his performance and choice of projects during his independent study in the Applied Tech lab.” ~Mr. Chuck Cataldo
12th grade - Julie Locantore
“Julie is such a pleasure to have in Anatomy! She clearly has an interest in the topics we are learning. She works hard to learn an incredible amount of new information and she consistently contributes to class discussions. Her positive attitude and conscientious approach to science do not go unnoticed!” ~Ms. Kari Flint

Shark Shout Out to Ms. Dooley, our students & our Best Buddies! They had a great Best Buddies Meeting thhis week with students from Ms. Fratus' and Mr. Herring's class and about 20 Best Buddies. It was a new Years party with noisemakers, beads, and everyone sharing their own favorite thing to do in the new year.
Of course there was a big balloon volleyball game and dancing! What a nice group of kids this year!
Happy New Year!
A parent emailed me to say what a wonderful custodial staff we have here at MRHS! Her child lost a retainer and Cliff and Dave went above and beyond to try to locate the expensive device! Although there was no luck in locating it, the parent said that they were "very helpful!"
