Book Buddies!
This year your child has a book buddy! These are personal friends of mine or family members who have partnered with our class. Their main purpose is to provide support through caring, positive thoughts, and even prayer if they choose, for our class this year. I let them know when we are having tough tests, big projects or just a rough week and they are supplying the good vibes. They are introducing themselves through a book they gifted to your child (they do know their student's first name only). This book is your child's to keep. We will be writing thank you notes next week in class. I'm excited to see where this project takes us and how their extra caring thoughts help us succeed this year!
Refocuses
Please make sure you sign your child's refocus and have them return it to me the next day.
Jackets Needed!
It tends to get a little chilly at times in our classroom. Your child is welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket to leave at school in the closet so they'll have something to wear if they get cold.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:47 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Your child will not have homework this year unless:
1. They are absent and make up work for the day will be sent home.
2. They are falling behind on Rocket Math facts, at which time I will send a letter to inform you there will be homework until they catch up and/ or meet the expected level.
Reading
In week 1 of our first reading unit we focused on main idea/ details and visualizing when reading. Visualizing means making a movie/ picture in your mind of what is happening in the text while you are reading. This improves reading comprehension!
Math
We started Lesson 3- understanding mental math strategies (make a 10)
Here are the student practice/ problem solving pages again if you'd like your child to work on them at home.
Here is a video of how to use making 10 to add (but you can also use it to subtract in the same way). This isn't me talking, but she did such a great job of explaining I decided to go with this one.

Writing- We published our first piece of writing. We also are working hard on what we are expected to do during writing workshop each day. We made anchor charts of what is expected so we won't forget!

Homework Help and Hints!
Reading the same books over and over sounds like a chore. But, it is a great way for students to develop reading fluency. Reading fluency is the ability to read smoothly, with correct intonation and inflection in your voice. Students who are fluent readers “sound like adults” when they read aloud. They do not stumble over words or add or delete words to make the sentences make sense. They read what is printed on the page. In addition to helping with fluency, rereading a book builds confidence in their reading ability. Get out those old favorites and start reading!
Data Binders- Look for them Tuesday!
Thank you for your comments inside! Just a reminder if you have a question for me, please don't write it in the binder. I don't usually get to look at them until later in the week and I want to respond to you in a timely manner. Thanks for helping the kids get them back to school on Tuesday!
