Author Visit with Philip Roy
- Author Philip Roy will be visiting Shelter Bay on January 23, 2019
- Philip Roy was born and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He studied music and history before choosing a career in writing. His love for the ocean, enjoyment of travelling, and fascination for submarines has led to the creation of the Submarine Outlaw series (SOS). These are tales of high adventure on the seas and waterways of the world, but also involve mythology, geography, ecology, invention and an embracing love of people, places, animals and things. The Submarine Outlaw series details the adventures of a young submariner, Alfred Pynsent, and his quirky crew of a dog and a seagull, as they circumnavigate the world. The series includes the following seven books: Submarine Outlaw, Journey to Atlantis, River Odyssey, Ghosts of the Pacific, Outlaw in India, Seas of South Africa and Eco-Warrior (Ronsdale Press). Philip’s eighth novel in the Submarine Outlaw series, Stealth of the Ninja, will be published in the winter of 2017. He has also published two works of historical fiction, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg and Me & Mr. Bell (Cape Breton University Press). I have found you both incredibly enthusiastic and timely in your responses. The Raptors 905 has given us the opportunity to have a kick-off event at one of the school's with the mascot, and we have chosen Shelter Bay if you would like to accept.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to get the students excited about the challenge.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you two are interested in hosting the kickoff.
Family Literacy day
- Family Literacy day will take place on January 21, 2019
- Family Literacy Day Activity Ideas
READ ALL ABOUT IT: Hold a reading contest where families are asked to keep track of all the books they read together as a family for one week. The family who reads the most together wins.
ART AND AUTHORS: Stories can be inspired by many different things, such as a painting or photo. Give each student a piece of artwork, and then have them write a story that centres around the illustration.
READING BUDDIES: Partner two classes of different reading levels together and schedule meetings for the buddies to read books and share stories together. These meetings could be followed with each buddy pair sharing their ideas about the story with the entire group, drawing pictures related to the story, or looking up information about the author.
WALL OF FAME: Designate a wall in your library to display photos of patrons along with lists of their favourite books and authors.
AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY BOOKS: Select age-appropriate books from around the world for your group. Give participants passports to be stamped for each region they cover.
