From the Principal
I hope you are well. This week we've all been watching as millions around the nation cast their ballots in the 2020 Election. Although our students are young and may not understand the importance of this election, I know they have been watching. I hope you've had or will take the opportunity to explain the importance of participating in our democracy through exercising their right to vote when they are of age. Perhaps some of them even had the opportunity to go to the polls with you as you participated. There are so many lessons they can learn through this historical event.
At school this week I visited several classes. Thank you again for the support during this time of virtual learning. This week our COVID Readiness Team will meet again to finalize the details of our plan. Special thanks to the parents who have collaborated with us. We are proud of the work we have done. It's almost complete and you will have an opportunity to see it soon.
Finally, we are beginning to work on our local accreditation process. In the coming weeks (shortly after Thanksgiving break), I will launch our stakeholder surveys. Thanks in advance for responding.

The Media Center has a lot of NEW, FUN things going on! Check it out:
Book Spotlights: On Tuesdays and Thursdays, during Oakie’s News, we are spotlighting books and book series that are available for checkout from our library. We hope your child will check some of them out!
Reading Owls Classroom: Your child now has an Oakhurst Reading Owls Google Classroom where you can find the Book Spotlight videos we show in Oakie’s News along with video instructions for how to check out books and the Flybrary details. The classroom will also be updated with helpful resources like How to Choose a Just Right Book and Assessing Your Child’s Bookshelf. This is a resource for you AND your child!
Book Bundles: Want your child to check out books but not sure which ones to choose? Let us choose for you! Use this Book Bundle Request form to give us some information and we’ll curate a bundle (four books) just for your child! Book Bundles can be picked up during Flybrary hours (Wednesdays 11 - 12). *If your family is unable to pick books up during this time, please email suhawins@csdecatur.net or eguerrieri@csdecatur.net .

Oakhurst Virtual Book Fair November 30 - December 4
We are so excited to be hosting an online book fair Nov. 30 - Dec. 4. Little Shop of Stories has worked hard to create an easy way to shop and purchase books while helping to support our school. If you need book suggestions, you can search for books by category directly on their website which can be found here. All orders over $25 ship for free or you can pick up the books at Little Shop of Stories. Just remember to include OAKHURST in the comments section at checkout so our school will get credit for the sale.

Decatur Education Foundation News
In non-pandemic years, we would be gearing up for our big fall party, Supper & Sips. Since we can't gather together in support of Decatur's kids to enjoy some delicious local food, drinks and fun games, we're launching our "Just Another Thursday Night at Home." While you won't enjoy the party and camaraderie of the Supper this year, you can still have that great feeling of fellowship by supporting our families with a gift to DEF. To participate: put on your jammies, pour yourself a beverage, get cozy on the sofa and click here.
Do you have some positive support to give to a Decatur student? DEF is still seeking some adult male volunteer mentors for their AIM Scholars Mentoring Program. AIM mentors are paired with 3rd grade students and “meet” regularly throughout the year. In just 2-4 hours per month, mentors help connect their mentees with educational and enrichment activities so they can find their passions and develop life skills. A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur
A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur is beginning preparations for our 26th year of service to the City of Decatur community. As with everything else in 2020, this program will be a little different than we are used to! Due to the pandemic, we will be changing our program to be managed online. If your family would like to request assistance with holiday gifts for children who live with you, through 8th grade, you must complete the SurveyMonkey application by November 15: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2020ASeasonofGiving If you have trouble with the form, questions, or concerns, please email us at aseasonofgiving@decaturga.com or call our voicemail, 404-378-8068, and leave a message. For those families who do not need assistance, and would like to participate, we would love your help! We have changed how we will handle the program for 2020. We will not be collecting physical gifts but providing gift cards to the families requesting assistance. If you would like to help us this year, please donate at https://legacydecatur.com/give/. Please select ‘A Season of Giving / Christmas Decatur’ for the organization in the donation form.
