NRWHS February 2018 Newsletter
Mission: to prepare each student for a successful future
Midterm Results Are In
I would like to thank everyone for contributing to a smooth Regents/midterm week. We are particularly grateful to parents who had to adapt their weekly routines to account for our modified schedule. The midterm week provides us with an important opportunity to identify current levels of understanding, and now that we have that valuable information, we (teachers, administrators, students, and hopefully parents!) can review it, identify areas in need of improvement, and develop plans for growth, As has been the case with previous interim assessments, our teachers are working collaboratively to identify learning gaps, and they will be responding to those gaps by reteaching content and providing additional support opportunities. Please remember that teachers are available for additional support from 2:25 to 2:55 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and academic support is also available each day from 3 to 5 pm through our Lift program. Second quarter report cards will be mailed home very shortly (early February), and you will see course-based results of the midterms (interim assessment #2) later in this newsletter.
We remain dedicated to our district mission of preparing each student for a successful future. We work to achieve this mission each day by setting and maintaining high academic expectations for our students because we know that a strong academic record leads to more opportunities down the road. Given that reality, we will be implementing a variety supports in the second semester. Beginning in the fourth quarter, we will be implementing a more structured study hall for students who are failing multiple subjects at the 30-week mark. Freshmen who are failing multiple subjects at the 30-week mark will be required to attend extra support sessions with their teachers during activity period after school. We also recognize the importance of incentivizing academic performance. We will be working with the student council to develop meaningful incentives for students. Currently, we are working on plans for a free trip to SeaBreeze for any student who has attained the New York State College and Career Ready designation (at least an 80 on a math Regents exam and at least a 75 on the English Regents exam).
As we continue to make academics our top priority, we are fortunate to have the ability to acknowledge our students’ impressive extracurricular efforts. Below you will read about incredible accomplishments in the Scholastics Art Competition, in the recent Science Olympiad event, and on the playing field. We are very proud of these students for promoting Cougar Pride!
Thank you for your continued support. As always, please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
