Tewksbury Public Schools
February 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear TPS Community,
As I walk the walls of our schools, I am struck by the amazing activities that showcase belonging, kindness, friendship and peace. In fact, the Heath Brook School has deemed the month of February as “Friendly February.” Each day has a suggestion to promote a more friendly and peaceful world. Today’s Friendly February task is to “Respond positively to everyone you meet.” Tomorrow’s suggestion is to “Look for the good side when other people frustrate you.” I applaud this initiative from our Heath Brook administration, teachers, staff, and of our youngest students. We can certainly all benefit from this approach if we hold this sentiment within our hearts.
February is also a month where we honor and highlight black history in the United States.
- “Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.” (National Geographic for Kids)
Students and staff have participated in learning activities (grade appropriate of course) at all schools, including: research, reading stories, watching videos, learning about Martin Luther King’’s famous speech, reflective writing and poetry, artwork creation and more. Over the February vacation the Tewksbury Public Library (TPL) is hosting a Black History Movie Series as well. Below in our Newsletter, you can see just some samples of our student work and find more details about the TPL movie series.
Finally, the need for a February break has been long-debated over time. As I visit the schools and talk to our principals and teachers, I can assure you that our students and teachers can benefit from this time to rest and rejuvenate. We wish everyone in our entire TPS community a wonderful vacation.
Sincerely,
Brenda Theriault-Regan
