Modifications and Accommodations
Trial and Error
There is no secret book! Don't be afraid to try things.
Simplify
Simplify assignments, requirements, questions, directions, grading etc.
Scaffold
You may have to do a little "hand-holding" and then slowly pull back. Show them the ropes.
*Students want to be successful.
Background Knowledge
Tap into a student's background knowledge. Find out about their background. Let them share information about their culture.
Discuss and Scribe
Have students tell you what they know, rather than only relying on writing, which may be a skill they struggle with. The teacher can then scribe what the student is saying.
Shorten Assignments
Shorten assignments, tests, test questions
Let them use their first language
Write, read in their first language when possible.
*Note sometimes they do not read in their first language.
Read Aloud
Read directions, text, tests, etc. aloud. Reading things aloud to students is one of the most beneficial things you can do for an ELL student.
VOCABULARY
When it doubt focus on vocabulary. They need to build their vocabulary (graphic organizers, Quizlet, PowerPoint, etc)
Interactive
Make it interactive, games, get them to use their new skills and vocabulary
Extra Time
Allow students to have extra time on assignments, tests, and projects.
Affective Filter
If students have low anxiety, their ability to learn will be higher. Make them feel comfortable in your class.
