Moreland Elementary
October 2022
A message from the principals:
This year our student population has grown to 535 in grades pre-K through 5th. We have 2 sections of prek, 4 sections of K, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades with 5 sections of 1st grade. We have welcomed Mrs. Megan Weaver and Mrs. Allyson Crider back to Moreland. Mrs. Weaver teaches 4th grade Math, Science and Social Studies. Mrs. Crider, a past student of Moreland, is welcomed as the 5th teacher on our 1st grade team. We have also welcomed some new faces to our staff, Mrs. Jenny Frix joins our Special Education Team as a collaborative teacher with our 4th and 5th graders, Mr. Austen Martin joins our 4th grade team teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies, Mrs. Tiffany Moore joins our Special Education Team working with our Kindergarten and 1st grade students. Also joining us this year are 3 very talented paraprofessionals Mrs. Britney Carroll in our special education department, Mrs. Ashton Dennis working in Kindergarten with Mrs. Karen Frady, and Mrs. Kaitlin Mize who joins Mrs. Tiffany Horton's Kindergarten classroom. Each of these wonderful educators brings with them experience, expertise, and excitement as they help us to grow our program at Moreland.
As we begin the 2nd nine weeks of school we move into the more comprehensive grade level standards and expectations. Please make every effort to help your students stay on top of assignments, projects, attendance, and grades through the use of Infinite Campus Parent Portal. If you need help with securing a parent portal account please let your child's teacher know and we will guide you.
Communication is key to the success of our academic program. Our teachers and staff utilize many methods of communication to keep everyone up to date. Classroom and grade level newsletters, agendas, email lists, text services (Remind or Bloomz), and Class Dojo are a few that are available. If you have a preferred method please let your child's teacher know and keep your phone numbers, address, and email current with the front office.
Just a reminder, that being present and on time to school every day is a key element for academic and social success. Our buses start unloading at 7:15, our front doors open to welcome students at 7:25, and our school day starts promptly at 8:00. It is always best to have students at school and ready to learn no later than 7:50. We thank you so much for helping us have successful students by keeping attendance a high priority.
As always, thank you for allowing us to partner with your family as we all Work Together to be Our Best.
Smiles,
Ms. Melanie Perry, Ed. S., Principal Moreland Elementary
Mrs. Cheri Barnett, Ed. S., Assistant Principal Moreland Elementary

Front Office
Every family must complete an affidavit of residency by Wed, Dec 14th! We have 2 notaries in the office and can print any needed documents. Let us know how we can help you!
Attendance notes - parents must send in a note anytime a student is absent from school. These can be emailed to olivia.cost@cowetaschools.net or sent in to the teacher. Doctor notes are always best but a parent can write a sick note. Remember any student arriving after the 8:00am bell will need to be signed in tardy. Parents should park and walk them into the office. Leaving before the 2:30 bell will also be counted as a tardy. Thanks for your help keeping your child's attendance up-to-date!
PTO
Thank you to everyone who helped raise money for our school with the Boosterthon. We raised $17,500.
We are so excited about the fall festival on October 14th. We will have food, games, and a costume contest.
School Nurse
Students that are sick should remain at home until they are fever-free without fever-reducing medication, no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours and able to hold down food and fluids. This will help reduce the spread of sickness within the school and give your child time to fully recover and feel their best when they return.
Students should not transport medication to or from school, this includes over-the-counter medications. A parent/guardian or authorized adult should bring medications to the school and see the nurse, there are forms that need to be signed and this is an opportunity to offer explanations and answer any questions. This policy is in place for safety reasons, thank you for your understanding. If there are extenuating circumstances please call the school and speak with the nurse.
ESOL
ESOL students are learning more about Hispanic Heritage month and discussing important key terms such as traditions, customs, and heritage.

Media Center
Thank you to everyone who donated change to the Coweta Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy. We raised money for children in Coweta County to receive a free book each month of their life from birth to five years. Thanks for helping spread the love of reading across our county!
October is Internet Safety Month. As we move more and more to online learning in schools, it’s important to talk to your child about online privacy, safety and security for both school and home. The information that we put in digital form can now be readily accessed by unintended viewers, whether because of an oversight in selecting privacy settings, the vulnerability of “secure” online data, sharing passwords that grant others access to personal accounts, or simply because a friend’s eyes wander to read personal text messages. Work together with your kids to be vigilant about keeping private information private.
You can find a list of fun games to review Internet safety on the Moreland Media Center website by going to https://bit.ly/MESInternetSafetyGames

Kindergarten
What a great beginning to our school year! We have settled into routines and really been working hard. We are reviewing all letters of the alphabet as well as the sounds they make. We have started blending simple three letter words. And, we are so impressed with how quickly students are learning their sight words. We have introduced numbers to ten, comparing numbers within ten as well as sorting items. Also, we have discussed “All About Me” and some community helpers. Recently, we have started our signs of Fall study. Thank you to all of our families for ensuring that your student is on time and prepared for each day!
1st Grade
We are having so much fun in first grade! The fall is such a fun time in our grade. We study apples, corn, pumpkins, and many other fall themes! We've investigated and explored these plants like scientists. We hope your students have come home and "taught" you some of what they have learned! Thank you for helping your children memorize their sight words, practice their phonics sounds, read daily, and practice their math fact fluency facts! We are working hard at school as well to become the best we can be!
2nd grade
We have had a great start to the school year! 2nd grade is really excited to be back at school learning and growing! We have established our routines and we are working hard on learning our sight words and phonics so we can grow as readers! We are making sure we have our addition and subtraction facts mastered as well so we can build on that foundation and learn 2 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping! Thank you to our Moreland parents for all you have done to make this school year a success!
3rd Grade
We have had a great start of the school year.
The students have been so excited about their journal writing, reading chapter books, and learning multiplication. They are loving the science lessons on rocks, minerals, and fossils. They really enjoyed our in-house field trip from Coweta Stem Institute.
In Social Studies we have learned the importance of being a good citizen and how to make the best choices for ourselves and our community.
Please remember to study multiplication and read 20 minutes every day!
4th Grade
Great start to the 2022-2023 school year as we have jumped in feet first! In reading/ELA, students have engaged in fictional and informational texts, narrative writing, and are currently working on opinion writing. All students are encouraged to reach a book goal of reading 30 books! Ask to see your child’s book log to see how it’s going.
In math, we have continued with multiplication, place value, addition and subtraction, and just finished factors and multiples. Be sure to practice those multiplication facts! In Science, we have learned fun facts about the water cycle, weather, and the four major types of clouds!
In Social Studies, we started the year off with learning how to budget our money and are currently enjoying a study of the American Revolution.
5th Grade
Fifth Graders have begun the final year of their Elementary Adventure. We are Reading for a 30 Book Challenge independently with the first recognition coming up on October 14th. (Ask to see their Reading Logs soon) We have also worked on a novel study of Frindle, and numerous informational texts and skills. Social studies and Science have been alternating back and forth in order to cover Earth science and Matter. We have also been studying the Reconstruction of the United States after the Civil War. For Math, we started the year by doing a place value and basic operations review from fourth grade. Then, we set our sights on solving equations with several operations by learning about the order of operations or P.E.M.D.A.S. Be sure to ask your student how to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimal numbers! As we have been working very hard on this skill as well! Don’t forget to study your multiplication facts and let's keep rocking on towards a fantastic year!
