* Just a reminder--if the temp is above freezing we DO go outside for recess. Students need coats (and hats and gloves if they choose) for recess. Please label coats with names as several students have similar jackets. *
Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will continue working on our 7 facts in math fluency this week. This is where students begin to have more difficulty so please make sure they are working on these facts at home. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. Fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous tested facts. We will have our accuracy check on the 7 facts next Friday.
Science-This week we will begin a new science unit called "Name That Shell". Throughout the weeks students will learn the difference between bivalves and gastropods and what animals make and use each type of shell.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--We will begin "Reading like Historians" as we focus on the adventures of Lewis & Clark and Sacajawea. We will prepare for reading, gather up facts, and set a purpose for finding the main idea of a story. We will be closely reading to determine key details in order to summarize. On Friday, we will have a Book Tasting to dive into biographies, historical fiction, and nonfiction books.
Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--We will focus this week on getting our brains thinking and getting our pencils moving. We will do Power Writing, Foghorn Writing, and 5-7-10 writing. We will wrap up our week by looking back at our past writing prompts and making a plan to improve. We will have a practice writing prompt on Friday.
