A Note from the Director...
Academics at Liberty Academy
Is my student on track to graduate?
Does your child know how many credits they have? Do you know how many credits your student has? If not, have them ask their advisor or Mrs. Streu. This is something every student should know!
At this point, we recommend that these grade levels have the following number of credits to be classified as "on track" to graduate:
Freshmen: 3.5
Sophomore: 10.5
Junior: 15
Senior: 21.5
As a parent, do you have access to PowerSchool to check grades/attendance? If not, please see Mrs. Streu at conferences to get set up!
Spotlight on Electives
- We know the teen brain comes to school sleepy, so we want to start them off with a course of high interest!
- We want to give students voice and choice during this time, so the activity is driven by student interest! We've had a guest Yoga instructor, built and stained a fabulous and functional bench, and many will leave this semester strumming a guitar!
- Ask your student: What goals are you setting each hour? Are you meeting them? What result/product do you have as a byproduct of that goal?
Math at LA
- Grades in PowerSchool are based on quizzes and tests.
- Quizzes and tests can be retaken.
- Students will work at their own pace, but a pacing guide is provided to help with goal setting to guide them through the semester.
- A 50% will be entered in PowerSchool one week after the due date on the pacing guide.
- Ask your student: Do you prefer to work on math by yourself, with a partner or with a teacher? What helps you be successful in math this semester?
English at LA
English Language Arts (ELA) at Liberty Academy involves the essential components of reading, writing, and discussion. Each week, students read a short passage usually around a theme of community, personal growth, or identity. In groups, students engage in conversation around that text, initiated by questions that either they have written or prompted by the instructor. Afterwards, in writing, students reflect on the passage and the conversation. ELA students are also keeping weekly reflective journals that detail progress on projects, completion of weekly goals, and life in general. Additionally, projects require a research, reading, writing, listening and speaking, presenting, and/or reflecting component. These pieces also help students earn this ELA credit.
- Ask your student: What are the KC Rising Skills and which one(s) are you working on this week? What are your academic and personal goals this week? What was Monday's group reading about? How did you respond to the reading and the conversation?
Online Courses
- In PowerSchool you will notice the online courses are notated by "eLib" in front of the course name. Important: the online course grade represents the percent of the course that has been completed. Our goal is for students to have their first class completed by 2/9/18!
- Ask your student: Can you show me you online class progress in Odysseyware? (When your student logs into Odysseyware and clicks on their courses you can see their current score for the online course and what percent of the course is complete.)
- As soon as your student finishes one online course a new online course will be added. This is a quick way to recover credit!
