Happy New Year!
Celebrating a New Year!
In Brazil, eating plenty of lentils is a sign of prosperity and wealth. In Denmark, after dinner on new years eve everyone should break the plate that was used because they believe it brings love for the following year. in China, paint the front doors red as a symbol for good luck and happiness. In mexico, sweeping the house at night to eliminate all negative vibes and bad energy, but also to start the year with a spotless house. In Spain and South America eating 12 grapes at one time as the bell strikes 12, brings good luck for the new year.
Random Acts of Kindness Around Alfred Vail
Here at Alfred Vail we encourage students to perform Random Acts of Kindness where children help others without being asked. Anytime a child is "caught" being kind, any staff member can write out a random act of kindness ticket for that student. That student can then place the ticket in our random act of kindness raffle, where three students are drawn weekly from the raffle and rewarded with a pencil. Each random act of kindness ticket is added to our tree outside the main office. By the end of the school year the tree is full of tickets. Our tree is about half full currently. We are always adding to it! Keep being Kind!
Helpful Academic Tips
Use these activities to build your child's phonetic awareness- their ability to hear sounds and words:
- Choose a three letter word such as cap, have your youngster substitute different beginning sounds from the alphabet to make new words. ( Lap, Map, Nap, Rap, Sap, Tap, Zap) How many can they think of?
- Pick a long word and tell them to clap once as they say each syllable. For mozzarella, they should clap four times. moz-za-rel-la.
- Ask your child to say a word without the first sound, example: " can you say sit without the s? " (answer: it)
- Think of a word and give your youngster a "sound" clue to figure it out. for instance, " I am thinking of a word for something that you chew but don't swallow. The word has an uh sound in the middle." Answer: Gum
