Feature Story: Thank you to our Volunteers!!
Special thanks are sent out to Sarah Wundrow
Sarah is not only a classroom volunteer but also a very active PACE participant. Sarah assists Mrs. Lien's first graders each week by making copies for Mrs. Lien and working directly with students. Sarah listens to individual children reading their word cards and anything else that is needed. She was inspired to volunteer because she had extra time in her week and wanted to give back to the school. As a PACE member she has been integral in a recent fund raiser that allows the Cadott schools to earn money each time people order Cadott Hornet Gear from the internet.
Sarah loves volunteering because she loves seeing the children's happy faces when she enters their classrooms. This seemingly small act really feels like she is making a difference. Thank you Sarah, you ARE making a difference!!
Principal's Pride
It is my pleasure to acknowledge Megan Lanou, Kyle Morrow, Brayden Hitz, Kiley Lewallen, Olivia Urbanek, Max Demulling, Mason Sande, Nora Davis, Clara Blanchette, Aiden Todd Rykal, and Logan Matherne this week for demonstrating strong character, and modeling our expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible.
Megan is being recognized for her kind and caring heart. She demonstrates the qualities that make her a fantastic friend, by always being willing to help others out. Thank you Megan for being such a great role model for kind and respectful behavior!
Kyle is being recognized for behaviors that model strong character. He pushes in chairs that are left out and straightens things that are out of order without being asked. He is consistently polite and strives to do his best work. Thank you Kyle for being such a great model for responsible behavior and strong character!
Brayden is being recognized for kind and respectful behavior to everyone. He is consistently willing to help out wherever or whenever he sees the need. He provides a great example for his classmates and adds so much to our school family. We really appreciate how you model these things for your peers and the student body as a whole. Thank you Brayden!
Kiley, Olivia, and Max are being recognized for demonstrating responsible behavior by cleaning up after a pretty messy Christmas project, where shredded paper was everywhere in the classroom. Thank you Kiley, Olivia, and Max for such responsible behavior!
Mason is being recognized for responsible behavior by helping to return our very expensive chromebooks to another classroom after his peers left them behind. This was a great demonstration of responsible behavior, thank you Mason for being such a great model!!
Nova is being recognized for responsible behavior and strong character. She is becoming more and more persistent in math. She works hard to complete her work and when faced with problems that are frustrating, she puts forth extra effort to complete the work. Keep up the amazing progress Nova, your strong character and responsibility is truly recognized!
Clara is being recognized for responsible behavior and strong character. She consistently helps her peers with difficult situations and models a hard work ethic, by putting forth strong effort on a daily basis. Thank you Clara for serving as a great model for your peers!
Aiden is being recognized for respectful behavior by showing kindness and helpfulness to a new student in his class. Aiden helped the student through the day and even walked that student to the bus at the end of the day. He was empathetic to someone who was unsure and new and made this student's first day a really positive one. Thank you Aiden for reaching out to help out a new student!
Logan is being recognized for respectful and responsible behavior when he stood up for another student on the bus. He stood up and stated, "stop picking on him, he is my friend!" and the teasing stopped. Thank you Logan for being courageous and for standing up in a respectful way to another student who was behaving poorly!
Looks like I will be having many recess and lunch dates this week!
What a joy! Mrs. Goettl
School News
ATTENTION: The start of our Instructional day will be 8:20 am beginning Monday, January 16!
Over the last couple of years our teaching staff have been discussing starting our instructional day 5 minutes earlier, at 8:20 am rather than 8:25 am. The rationale for this change is that students are getting to school early each day to eat breakfast and enjoy playtime on the playground with their peers. Our first bell to enter halls and classrooms is at 8:12 am, which then allows students 13 minutes to undress and roam halls and other such activity. With starting our instructional day at 8:20 am, this extra time in halls is reduced to 8 min., which for most students is enough time to undress and get into their rooms. We understand that this will mean those families who drive students into school will need time to adjust to this 5 minute early start and so we will be lenient for one month on tardys for students who do not come to school on a bus. Please note that starting Feb. 13th if your child is not in his/her classroom by 8:20 am this will be considered a tardy.
The teaching staff is excited to get an extra 5 minutes of instructional time back each day due to this change.
Thank you for understanding our students' needs come first! We want to have a quantity of high quality time when students are at school.
I wish you all well! Mrs. Goettl

Shadow a Student Day
The Shadow a Student Challenge is a fun, illuminating, and supportive journey where school leaders come together to empathize with their students and take new kinds of action at their school.
Educators and researchers have long known that shadowing can lead to powerful observations and insights to drive change. The Shadow a Student Challenge provides methods and a network to help school leaders achieve Deeper Learning for all students.
Mrs. Goettl will participate in this challenge on February 15th. She will shadow one student from the beginning of the day through dismissal, putting on their sneakers, walking in their shoes, learning about their needs, in order to take action for positive change.
Mrs. Goettl should shadow me because...
I wish I could shadow each student in our elementary, but since there aren't enough days in the school year for 477 "shadowing days" I have to narrow down to just one.
Therefore I am inviting our students to tell me why it is important for me to shadow them over others. They can send me a video or written essay with their reasons why it is important to shadow them. Families can help their students (especially younger ones) with their submissions.
*Parents must provide permission for the Shadow a Student Challenge
Submissions with strong rationale will be put into a drawing.
Submissions are due on or before Feb. 1st, 2017.
The student chosen for the "Shadow a Student Challenge" will be announced on Ground Hogs Day (Feb. 2nd) and Mrs. Goettl will shadow that student Wed., Feb. 15th.

Healthy New Year’s Resolutions for Children & Teens
The start of the new year is a great time to help your children focus on forming good habits. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides the following list of ideas for you to talk to your children about trying, depending on their age.
Preschoolers
- I will try hard to clean up my toys by putting them where they belong.
- I will let my parents help me brush my teeth twice a day.
- I will wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating.
- I will learn how to help clear the table when I am done eating.
- I will be friendly to all animals. I will learn how to ask the owners if I can pet their animal first.
- I will do my best to be nice to other kids who need a friend or look sad or lonely.
- I will talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I need help or am scared.
Kids, 5 to 12 years old
- I will drink reduced-fat milk and water most days. Soda and fruit drinks are only for special times.
- I will take care of my skin by putting on sunscreen before I go outdoors on bright, sunny days. I will try to remember to stay in the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I'm playing sports.
- I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a week!
- I will always wear a helmet when riding a bike, scooter or skateboard.
- I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car. I'll sit in the back seat and use a booster seat until I am tall enough to use a lap/shoulder seat belt.
- I'll try to be friendly to kids who may have a hard time making friends by asking them to join activities such as sports or games.
- I will tell an adult about bullying that I see or hear about to do what I can to help keep school safe for everyone.
- I will keep my personal info safe and not share my name, home address, school name or telephone number on the Internet. Also, I'll never send a picture of myself to someone I chat with on the computer without asking my parent if it is okay.
- I will try to talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I have a problem or feel stressed.
- I promise that I'll do my best to follow our household rules for videogames andinternet use.
Kids, 13 years old and older
- I will try to eat two servings of fruit and two servings of vegetables every day. I will drink sodas only at special times.
- I will do my best to take care of my body through fun physical activity and eating the right types and amounts of foods.
- When I have some down time for media, I will try to choose educational, high-quality nonn-violent TV shows and video games that I enjoy. I will spend only one to two hours each day – at the most – on these activities. I promise to respect out household rules for videogames and internet use.
- I will do what I can to help out in my community. I will give some of my time to help others, working with community groups or others that help people in need. These activities will make me feel better about myself and my community.
- When I feel angry or stressed out, I will take a break and find helpful ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or talking about my problem with a parent or friend.
- When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk about my choices with an adult whom I can trust.
- When I notice my friends are struggling, being bullied or making risky choices, I will look for a trusted adultso that we can attempt to find a way to help.
- I will be careful about whom I choose to date. I will treat the other person with respect and not force them to do something they do not want to do. I will not use violence. I will expect to be treated the same way in return.
- I will resist peer pressure to try tobacco-cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol. I will also avoid the use of e-cigarettes.
- I agree not to use a cell phone or text message while driving and to always use a seat belt.

What Is Love and Logic All About?
The Love and Logic Institute is dedicated to making parenting and teaching fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic. We provide practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with their children. All of our work is based on a psychologically sound parenting and teaching philosophy called Love and Logic.
What Is Love and Logic?
Children learn the best lessons when they're given a task and allowed to make their own choices (and fail) when the cost of failure is still small. Children's failures must be coupled with love and empathy from their parents and teachers.
This practical and straightforward philosophy is backed with 30 years of experience. Parents can apply it immediately to a wide range of situations instead of struggling with difficult counseling procedures
Why Does It Work?
Uses humor, hope, and empathy to build up the adult/child relationship
Emphasizes respect and dignity for both children and adults
Provides real limits in a loving way
Teaches consequences and healthy decision-making
