** You may now view recorded meetings linked from the Board Notices section of the School Board page on our website.
January is School Board Recognition Month and Gunter ISD is celebrating its trustees for their dedication and commitment to the district and its students. The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is Locally Elected, Community Connected, which highlights the connection between school trustees and their communities. School board members are the largest group of locally-elected officials in the state.
Coach Applewhite and his Outdoor Education students prepared a meal for the GISD School Board to enjoy before the January meeting. They served grilled steaks, baked potatoes, beans, rolls, and a cobbler baked right on the fire! The aroma in the admin building was heavenly! The campuses showered board members with gifts of appreciation at the school board meeting. Each member received a floral arrangement compliments of Miss Loving's Floral Design class, a bundt cake, a basket of goodies, and notes of appreciation.
January may be the month when we show our appreciation, but we hope they know that we appreciate them all year long. Thank you for selflessly serving our district!
“Texas school boards are so important because they bring a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of their local communities to their role,” Troxell said. “Boards lead their districts by providing oversight, setting goals, overseeing the budget, and selecting and evaluating the superintendent. These volunteers serve for the betterment of their communities.”
Thank you for your service to the district!

School Safety Bulletin
... from the desk of Chief Satre
Please take time to review the safety newsletter for the month of January.
D.A. Brett Smith, GCCAC Summer Junior, and GCSO Cheryl Brasuell visited with our students in grades 7-12 on January 31st to pass along a very important message regarding Human Trafficking.
The students learned that anyone can be a trafficker, there is not a specific stereotype to watch out for. The trafficker might be a stranger, "friend", or family member. With this knowledge, students were given red flags to watch out for.
The presentation covered safety online strategies, reminding students that nothing is private. The general piece of advice was to not post or share anything that you wouldn't want blasted out on the front page of a newspaper or several apps. They also reminded the students to watch out for their friends, and to tell an adult if they notice something is not quite right. #SeeSomethingSaySomething
A HUGE THANK YOU to D.A. Brett Smith for putting together this team to come and speak to our students. The presentation was eye opening and we know that you have impacted the lives of our students and gave them some tools to make good choices.
Parents, this would be a great topic of conversation to continue at home. Make sure you understand the importance of this topic and to instill in your child the fact that they can come to you for help in any situation.

100 Days Smarter!
On January 29th, we celebrated the fact that we were 100 days SMARTER from the time we began this 23-24 journey! Students were busy in the classroom working on projects that included 100 items. 100 days is a long time, it also looks as if our students and teachers might have aged a bit during that time :)
Lunar Landers
Students in Mrs. Pelzel and Mrs. Harper’s math and science classes were challenged to make lunar landers! The goal was to make a space craft with 4 shock absorbers that would land gently on the floor from a 4 foot drop. Their marshmallow astronauts need to stay safely on the lander. It was so much fun!

Making Snow!
When the weather outside is frightful, Mrs. Loewen's class makes snow in the Library with Mrs. Hoel!
Mrs. Bon's 5th grade scientists learned about erosion using equipment previously purchased from a Gunter GIFT grant. The students packed the dirt on the platform and then attached a "rain-maker" at the top. When they poured water in, the rain-maker distributed the water as if it were raining. Students were able to see how, over a period of time, erosion begins. When they can actually see science working, the lesson is so much more clear!

Welcome to Gunter Middle School!
Please welcome Elisha Robertson to the GMS staff. Elisha will be working as a resource aide for the campus and we are so excited for her to work with our students!
Hi, my name is Elisha Robertson. I graduated from Texas Woman's University with a degree in Psychology. Since then, I have worked with kids of all ages in many settings including schools, home daycare, churches, and private preschools. I once heard a quote that "every child is a divine appointment" and I truly believe that. I've been married to my husband, Wes, for 22 years and we have 4 kids. We have been in church ministry together for 24 years. Our family loves all things outdoors! Camping, traveling, hiking, fishing, and raising our mini-farm are just a few of our favorite activities. I try to live each day with intention. One of my favorite Bible verses is Ephesians 2:10 "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

HOSA
HOSA members presented Women Rock with a donation check in the amount of $100. The money for the donation was raised during the Pink Out fundraiser held in October. It was a great success and the group plans to continue the fundraiser again next year! Thank you for supporting such a worthy cause.
HOSA will be sponsoring a blood drive on February 28th at the high school from 9 AM - 3 PM. Come out and give the gift of life!
THEATRE
High School One Act Play is gearing up for the season and are in rehearsals for "Bad Seed". The original movie, "The Bad Seed" was remade in 2018 with Rob Lowe as the director. This one act will be a thriller where a father is forced to question his daughter's role in a murder. The students were excited to visit the costume shop to select and have their costumes fitted. Competition is right around the corner, keep an eye out for the announcements. Check out the cast list here: https://5il.co/2dwze
Matilda
GMS and GHS students are in rehearsal season for their musical, Matilda. The performances will be in May, watch for the announcements for times and tickets. There are approximately 50 students participating in this show between the 6th and 12th grade. Check out the cast list here: https://5il.co/2dwzf
TECH
There would be no "Theatre" without the behind the scenes people. The Theatre Tech classes were tasked to make "food props" from tissue paper, paint and glue. They had to create a burger that looked real enough to fool an audience. The winning student submission was awarded with a gift certificate for "real food" from Lucy's. Great job, Tech!
BAND
Congratulations to Maddox Waggoner for earning 1st chair Bass Clarinet in the Area Competition (1/9/24) and has secured a spot in the All-State band! Maddox will now get to perform at a concert at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio on February 10th. There were over 70,000 students in the State audition, so to make this group is a huge honor. Congratulations Maddox!
All-Region Clinic / Concert
Gunter was well represented at the All-Region Concert by several of our Tigers (see list below). This is a great experience for our students in middle and high school band. Students audition and are selected to participate. They spend most of the day in clinic with students from other schools who were also selected preparing for the concert that evening. The students learn to work alongside other musicians and learn to take direction from another director. All of the hard work ends with an unbelievable performance on stage that evening for family and friends. Great job students!
GHS: Caleb Siler, Maddox Waggoner, Brooklynn Neufeld, Christi Grayard, Samuel Waggoner, Sarah Smith, Hailey Foster; GMS: Amani Kirru, Jacob Endsley, Kendrew Campbell, Melanie Martinez, Grant Gartrell
The future of the Tiger Bands look great! GMS students attended a "choose your instrument night" in January and were able to talk with the instructors to choose the best instrument for them.
No worries! If you couldn't make it for the event, you can still join band! All incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders are welcome. Email Mr. Nguyen at dnguyen@gunterisd.org and he will take care of everything.
