South Carolina Teaching Standards 4.0
While I will begin presenting information regarding this new system and the impact it will have on you at the beginning of 2018, going to this training could prove very valuable. Aside from training you how to evaluate using this new system, the training takes you through the new rubrics being used for evaluation and provides lots of information that is relevant to you right now!
The training will be held at Sullivan Middle School in the Media Center Professional Development classroom. Session 3 is scheduled for February 6-8, 2018, and Session 4 will be held Feb. 9, 12-13, 2018. This training will equip veteran teachers to serve as peer evaluators for the new Expanded ADEPT formal evaluation process in 2018-2019. In order to attend, a teacher must have completed at least one year on Continuing contract and have a Principal Recommendation on file –
Please email me ASAP if you would like to attend! I will submit the recommendation for you!

Be In The Know...3rd Grade Retention
The law states:
Beginning with the 2017- 2018 school year, a student must be retained in the third grade if the student fails to demonstrate reading proficiency at the end of the third grade as indicated by scoring at the lowest achievement level on the state summative reading assessment that equates to Not Met 1 on the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS).
Exemptions Include:
Good cause exemptions from mandatory retention include students:
•with limited English proficiency and less than two years of instruction in English as a Second Language program;
•with disabilities whose Individual Education Plan
(IEP) indicates the use of alternative assessments or alternative reading interventions;
•with disabilities whose IEP or Section 504 Plan reflects that the student has received intensive remediation in reading for more than two years but still does not substantially demonstrate reading proficiency;
-who demonstrate third grade reading proficiency on an alternative assessment approved by the board and which teachers may administer following the administration of the state assessment of reading;
•who have received two years of reading intervention and were previously retained;
•who through reading portfolio documentation demonstrate the mastery of the state standards in reading that is equal to at least one level above the lowest achievement level on the state reading assessment; and
•who successfully participate in a Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camp (SRC) at the conclusion of the third grade year and demonstrate through either a reading portfolio or through a norm-referenced, alternative assessment approved by the SCDE, that their
mastery of the state standards in reading is equal to at least a level above the lowest level on the state reading assessment.
Our District Process to Communicate with Families:
-1st 9 Weeks- Every third grade student received the letter below.
-2nd 9 Weeks- 3rd grade students projected to score "Not Met 1" on reading SCReady will receive a 2nd letter. The district will cast a wide net when projecting these students to ensure that we inform all families. Teachers should meet with parents/guardians of students who receive a letter after 2nd 9 weeks and should continue to meet with and document meetings with these parents/guardians.
Click here for a flow chart for student retention.
Click here for information regarding parent communication and timeline.
Again, we will continue our conversation throughout the year.
