IMPORTANT - What's Going on With Cell Phones?
At this point, you may have heard your child say something about cell phones at CHS. As cell phones become increasingly common for all students, we are noticing some alarming trends that impact student learning. Many research studies have indicated that the level of connection that students have with their cell phones leaves little room for downtime increasing anxiety and depression in teens. One study aimed to track the number of notifications that a student receives during the day and that total was well over 500. Even if their phones never leave their pocket, if you can imagine it buzzing 500 times a day, it would be very difficult to concentrate even if highly motivated.
We already have a policy that supports making decisions about appropriate phone use, but we realized as a school that we have to do something to help our students set boundaries for themselves to increase their chances of learning at high levels.
We have communicated through classrooms and in whole grade-level meetings that there is no change to our cell phone policy at CHS. Our policy is a red, yellow, green policy.
RED: No phone zones. Cell phones may not be used in bathrooms, locker rooms, and offices.
YELLOW: Teacher-directed zones. Teachers determine and communicate whether cell phone use is appropriate for the educational purposes of the lesson. Unless there is an educational purpose, cell phones should not be used in classrooms.
GREEN: Phone use acceptable. Hallways during passing time and the cafeteria during lunch.
We are, however, employing a tool to help our students resist the temptation of using their cell phones when they are supposed to be engaged in the work of learning. We have purchased cell phone lockers (charging stations) that lock up a student's cell phone so it is secure and provides a place for students to charge their phones during the class period. For many students (and adults too), the temptation to look at their phones is too great to resist, so removing the temptation will help with engagement and help build a level of confidence in their ability to set boundaries for their attention.
By no means are we forcing students to lock up their phones, but the expectation will be that if phones are not to be used, that a student would not use their phones during the hour.
If you need to get a hold of your child during the hour because of an emergency, you are always welcome to call our main office and we will pull them from class to get them the urgent message.
