Community Resources
We wanted to make sure all of our families know about some of the awesome resources in our area! Please contact Mrs. Hodson, school social worker, if you would like more information or to utilize any of these resources.
Joy Closet-
This is a low-cost thrift store in Gardner and they have generously provided us with vouchers for FREE clothing, shoes, linens, books, and small household items. Each voucher is good for 20 items per household.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace-
This is an organization of amazing volunteers in Gardner who build, assemble, and deliver top-notch bunk beds and new bedding to children and families in need.
BackSnacks-
Harvesters’ BackSnack program provides a weekly backpack filled with nutritious, child-friendly food for schoolchildren to take home over the weekend throughout the school year. Students who have signed up will meet in Mrs. Hodson’s room at the end of the day on Fridays for “Kids Kafe” to check-in and receive their BackSnacks, putting them straight in their backpacks. We will start this October 4th so please sign up by emailing Mrs. Hodson at hodsonj@usd231.co

Monthly Challenge
Counselor and Social Worker Corner
Starting August 26 we will begin to have our counseling lessons in the classrooms. Grades K-4 will have counselor lessons every other week. PreK will have weekly lessons beginning mid-September. This week, we will spend time introducing our new social worker, visit the social worker and counselor offices, and review what services we offer to students.
We want our students and parents to know that we are here to help ensure this is a great year for EVERY learner, EVERY day, in EVERY way. We are available to help assist our families with needs here at Madison and outside of school. At school, we provide peer mediation, develop student support plans for classroom success, and work with individual students and small groups to provide instruction and social-emotional support. Please reach out to us if you have any questions, want to brainstorm how we can best support your child, or need someone to talk with you about how your child's year is going.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year!

Deb Clegg, School Counselor
Library Volunteers
Our school Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Schmuhl, is looking for first-grade parents who are interested in coming in once a month during lunch to read a picture book to a small group of kids from your child’s class. You would have freedom to pick the date and have no more than 5 kids in a group. There will be a basket in the library that you could choose books from or you are welcomed to bring in a book of your choice.
Fourth-grade parents are also needed to host a book club group. We are hoping to get at least 1 if not 2 parents per class. These volunteers are asked to come in 2 times a month for the months of October - February during their child’s lunch. They are also asked to read the 4 books Mrs. Schmuhl has chosen from the William Allen White list and lead discussions with their group. Mrs. Schmuhl will provide discussion questions.
Mrs. Schmuhl is also in need of a book shelver. This would involve coming in on Thursdays to shelve books. This works best if you are able to come in at 8:30 to shelve the books before students start showing up for classes.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact Mrs. Schmuhl at schmuhla@usd231.com.
