JUST THE FACTS!
…… About ANXIETY
We are all feeling a bit stressed these days and sometimes with that stress comes anxiety.
So, what does anxiety feel like?
· Feeling worried, nervous or sad
· Feeling tired
· Muscle tension
· Sleep problems
· Feeling scared about what MIGHT happen
It’s not unusual for everyone to feel anxious sometimes. Anxiety is often a normal reaction to everyday challenges that teenagers face. Recently, many teens are experiencing anxiety and this seems to be related to - not surprisingly - the increased use of social media. It’s normal for teens to worry about what others think of them but the use of social media can make this worry overwhelming. How do they think I look? What are they saying about me? Do they “like” the things I post? And on and on and on…
Sometimes anxiety can be constant and so overwhelming that it affects the way people feel, think and behave. It can also affect how someone’s body feels physically, sometimes causing various medical concerns. This type of anxiety interferes with a person’s daily life (such as avoiding school, friends or social activities) and is considered a mental health issue.
Anxiety can be helped with many activities such as relaxation techniques, getting enough sleep, healthy eating, exercising, deep breathing and other mindfulness activities. (For one idea, check out the 3-minute body scan below in Essentials with Ms. Ellingsen). Or, perhaps, spending less time on social media if that is adding to your anxiety. If someone is experiencing the more serious type of anxiety that is affecting their daily life, they can reach out for support from parents, teachers, counselors and doctors who can help come up with ways to successfully help them address this overwhelming type of anxiety.
