Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
April 1st-5th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will continue with our astronomy unit and learn about shadows, the moon, and planets. Students will be receiving their unit test study guide throughout the week to help them begin studying. They should also be working on their solar system project which is due on April 10th. I inserted the directions for this project below.
- Mrs. Thurston/Leonard/Uhlenhake's Math and ELA: This week in reading we are continuing Author’s Purpose. Spelling will start again this week and we will test the following week. Reading Response will be due Friday. We are also working on novel studies. The kids are LOVING them!!! In writing, we are going to focus on Figurative Language and integrate them into our novel study discussions! In math this week we will be learning about line plots and area and perimeter. We will start geometry the following week before spring break.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: In ELA this week we will continue learning about Greek mythology. We will also begin figurative language and focus on similes and metaphors. This week will also start back with spelling words. Students will receive their words this week and then test next week. In math we will be analyzing and creating line plots. Students will have to measure different items to the nearest fractional amount and then use that information to make a line plot. We will also start back with periodic timed tests so please encourage your children to continue studying their multiplication facts. Finally, Genius Hour projects should be finishing soon. After spring break, students will begin signing up for a time to share their projects. Parents will be welcome to come and watch their child present once a time is set up. Students are welcome to finalize genius hour projects at home, but they will still have their designated hour each week.

From Ms. Macanas
Hello Parents!
Ms. Harris has taken back 3/4 of the subjects and I'm down to only teaching science this week! My time with your students has flown by. As always, please remember to review their multiplication facts as well as any measurement units. For example, ask them what time it is at random, have them estimate the length of something, or how much something may weigh at home using either customary or metric units. For Ms. Harris' ELA block, we have given them a new set of spelling words, so please practice how to spell those with them. In science, we are continuing our exploration in astronomy. Their study guides for the unit test will be glued down today, so please start reviewing what they have learned so far with them. Thank you for all of your help!

Map Testing Starts Tomorrow!
April 2nd: Reading
April 9th: Math
Information From Mrs. Jackley Regarding Parent Portal
The 3rd Quarter has come to a close and report cards will be sent home with students on Wednesday, April 3rd. Report card time is often when parents seek additional ways to support their student(s) to ensure academic success. Parent Portal is an excellent tool that allows you to view overall grades as well as individual assignment grades. You can also view your child’s attendance record.
Many Parents have already created an account and are familiar with Parent Portal. For our 2nd grade parents, this is first year that you will access Parent Portal to view grades. You must have the school-issued User Name and Password to setup an account.
If you are unsure of how to access Parent Portal or Add a Student, please contact Donna Jackley at JackleyD@FortMillSchools.org or at 548-8290.
For K and 1st students, you may wish to set up an account for future use. You are only able to view attendance and the student’s schedule for Kindergarten and 1st grade students – grades are not available until 2nd grade.
For Mobile Users: *There is also Parent Portal App for Mobile Phones. Search for it using “Powerschool Mobile” as the search words. The District Code is: MRDR
