Maslow Before Bloom!
First purpose: In our rush to return to learning, we must consider the humans first (and learning second). We are experiencing collective trauma. Safety and belonging will need to be restored intentionally.
Second purpose: Having met our basic needs at the bottom of the pyramid, having worked on our emotional needs in its middle and worked at achieving our potential, Maslow felt we needed to transcend thoughts of ourselves as islands. We had to see ourselves as part of the broader universe to develop the common priorities that can allow humankind to survive as a species. This means adults need to consider the importance of generosity: believing we have something of worth to give to others. Guiding students so that they identify and solve community problems, giving to something larger than self (classroom, school or community ). This could help us building the kind of culture we really want.
Restoring Community During Covid-19: Drop In Sessions
Join us Thursday and Friday at 1pm. Last week's conversations were fabulous!
This week: unpacking a few resources (for staff and/or students) around trauma informed practices; sharing some ready to use resources for restorative circles.
The pandemic has caused collective trauma and the need for physical distancing. Because we are wired for connection, we must be intentional about restoring community and creating opportunities for healthy social interactions. When adversity feels like a shared experience, we cope better- not only emotionally but neurobiologically.
These drop-in sessions, using Zoom, are designed to assist school staff in processing their experiences during the pandemic so that they can be of support to others, including students. In addition, we will explore ways to restore the community with other school staff, students, and parents. Topics may include the following: creating a trauma-informed communities, becoming restorative in all you do, building emotionally resiliency, attending to school-wide SEL and more. Audience: all school staff, particularly: teams or individuals focused on well-being/culture/climate, leadership, crisis response, restorative practices, trauma informed practices, PBIS. Facilitators: Julie McDaniel-Muldoon and Mary Perfitt-Nelson

SEL To Go: Supports For Teachers
I am pleased to share with you that the Wayne State University Stress, Trauma, and Anxiety Research Clinic (STARC Lab; starclab.org) is offering free online-based support for districts this fall. We are offering 30-60 minute groups for children that feature online delivered dance/movement therapy, art therapy and/or mindful yoga.
Attached to this email you may find details of our proposed collaboration to benefit students in the district, and background information on our programming. Please forward this email and the attached to any districts that might be interested in utilizing our services.
Questions may be directed to Lana Ruvolo Grasser.
The resources in these documents were designed to support educators, children, and families during this time. There is tremendous value in acknowledging and making space for children’s feelings. As many schools close and/or move to online learning, we invite teachers to adapt the ideas below and share them with families.

SEL To Go: Supports for Leadership Teams
Leveraging Social and Emotional Learning to Support Adults in the Time of COVID-19
Visioning Around School-Wide SEL
With the pandemic and the growing levels of anxiety, we must consider the mental health of the entire school community. Visioning is an important first step when we begin drafting plans for "reopening".
A collaboratively developed schoolwide vision takes into account the school’s unique strengths and needs and reflects the hopes, needs, and efforts of the entire school community. The shared vision:
- Serves as an anchor for all that the school does to support students academically, socially, and emotionally.
- States the school community’s hopes for what students will experience at school.
- Provides stakeholders with a sense of collective responsibility and unity.
In this folder, you will find everything needed for two one-hour whole staff sessions to bulid SEL and community in the adults and to created a shared vision. The agenda is complete. It includes
- Inclusive beginning activity
- Hopeful ending activity
- Everything needed to complete a shared vision

SEL To Go: Share with Parents
“I [STILL] can’t breathe”: Supporting kids of color amid racialized violence
Black, Brown, Native peoples, poor people – we talk with our children about how to interact with police. We file formal complaints against abusive officers. (Derek Chauvin had at least SEVENTEEN complaints on his record before his encounter with George Floyd.) We take videos that go viral. We share our stories with media outlets. We file lawsuits. We protest, allies at our side. If it were just up to us to stop the racialized violence directed against us, we’d be having a completely different conversation right now.
With COVID-19 as backdrop, some predict a “long, hot summer.” Others see a promising new determination by many Whites to become a vigorous part of the solution. In this complicated context, what conversations about policing, violence, safety, justice, and race should we be having with our children of color?
