It's hard to believe we are just a few short weeks from the end of school year!
Seniors are wrapping up testing and making their college and career decisions for life post-high school and Juniors are springing into action for nexts steps to plan for next year!
As we make those plans, there are some really important things you need to focus on these next few weeks and over the summer to help prepare you for what's next and set you up for success! This Newsletter has some really important info for you, so try not skim and let's begin! - Everything that is linked in this newsletter will take your ight to the place you need to go!

Keep searching for scholarships.
Build a personal campus resources directory: Learn about the services available on your college campus, and keep track of them here. It will serve as an important guide as you settle in on campus in the fall.
- The Summer Before College: A Five-Step Guide (for Productivity or Fun): It’s your last summer before heading off to college. Make it count.
Understand your Award Letters: College Decision Day is Sunday May 1st - As you are committing to your schools, please make sure you have reviewed your award letters, and understand the total cost of attendance for you and what is financially feasible and in your best interests! Make sure your schools have all the information they need from you!
Check your MDCAPS account- They are updating awards- Make sure you have uploaded your transcript for the Guaranteed Access Grants and College Promise Scholarship
If you have your heart set on a college, but the cost is overwhelming- consider writing a letter of appeal to the financial aid office - colleges are good at finding additional funding and resources for students when asked- but you gotta ASK!
Apply to scholarships like it's your job!!! ( Seriously- if you take an hour a week to apply to 2-3, and get one scholarship for $1,000 that week - you just made $1,000 an hour ( way more than I make) and that is $1,000 towards your books, food, room, that you don't have to get a loan for or pay out of pocket! - look through all my schoology posts, Naviance, and FASTWEB to find scholarships to apply for and this newsletter!
Going to CCBC? Sign up for their Summer Bridge Program and attend their online virtual information sessions, and visit campus - don't forget to sign up for the CCBC college promise scholarship to see if you can go tuition-free!
Please make sure you have completed the Senior Survey in Naviance- This is a BCPS requirement - -update us on what your post high school plan is, where you are headed, and track your scholarships- We need to know where to send your final transcripts to!
The Senior Awards Ceremony will held on June 6th at 8am with commencement practice following directly after!
Juniors- What Should I be doing now?
Ask teacher(s) for letters of recommendation you’ll need in the fall: Many teachers cap the number of letters they’ll write, so it’s good to make the ask early. They may write your letter this summer while your work and contributions to the classroom are fresh in their mind.
How to Create a College List (with tracking spreadsheet): Keep making progress. Make sure you’re excited about all the schools on your list, not just the reaches. Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be is a great read.

How to Write a College Essay: Wondering how to get started on your college essays this summer? Read this step-by-step guide, which walks you through the process.
5 Resources and Tips for Getting Scholarships and Financial Aid: These are a great set of tips and resources as you begin your scholarship search. Use this template to keep track of opportunities that might be a good fit.
Get familiar with Naviance- You will be doing everything for your college applications and graduation here! This is where you will build your college list, upload your applications, letters or recommendations, essays, resumes, etc -
Post-secondary planning – Continue to add things to your post-secondary folder or box: copies of your service learning forms, any awards or certificates you are given, a list of activities in which you’ve participated, etc. When it’s time to write a resume’, this information will be helpful. Naviance also has a resume writing tool under the "My Stuff" tab.
-Look at opportunities Get a summer job, internship, or volunteer to help build your skills, experience, and applications next year! may boost your resume and give you networking opportunities. Take on leadership roles in your activities.
-For student athletes looking to play sports in college, double-check that your NCAA and/or NAIA portals are up to date. Complete online athletic recruitment forms for each college you are considering. These are found under the "Athletics" tab on colleges' websites.
-For students interested in Fine and Performing Arts, you will most likely need to create a portfolio and audition materials so work on these pieces this year!
-Visit colleges! There is no substitute for actually stepping foot on a college campus to see if it is a good fit for you! Click on the "Visit" link on any college website to find out about opportunities for campus tours. Summer is a great time to do this!

Kappa Alpha PSI Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore Scholarship Program : 4 scholarships available - Deadline May 20th
KAΨFMB : The Foundation’s purpose is to support the philanthropic interests of the Baltimore Alumni Chapter thereby improving the human condition for the Baltimore Metropolitan area’s communities, families and individuals in need.The Marie Lloyd/Ed Lamon scholarship essay contest is offering a $1,500 per semester award to graduating seniors.
The deadline date to apply is July 15, 2022. Attached is the Marie Lloyd/Ed Lamon flyer that highlights the eligibility requirements and application process.
Lianna Baine Memorial Scholarship for Loch Raven High School
Who: Seniors Only Majoring in the Arts
What: One 2,000 scholarship will be awarded to one LRHS Student with plans to major in the arts/ fine arts

MISSUTILITY/DISTRICT ONE CALL
Accepting applications through Friday, May 27 for its eighth annual college scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. - This is open for ALL seniors to apply
To submit the Miss Utility/District One Call Scholarship application online, please visit https://form.jotform.com/MissUtility/Scholarship22.
Miss Utility/District One Call will select eight graduating high school seniors from Maryland and Washington, D.C., to each receive a $1,008.11 single-year scholarship.

How to Log Into Naviance
To log into Naviance:
1. Go to NAVIANCE.COM
2. Select "ACCOUNT LOGIN"--> Click FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS
3. WHICH SCHOOL…? Enter 21286 (GO) and click on Loch Raven High
4. Select STUDENT on the next page
5. Click CONTINUE WITH CLEVER (blue box)
On the next page it may ask you to type Loch Raven again
6. Click LOG IN WITH ACTIVE DIRECTORY.
Parents/ Guardians have access to their student's account. To gain access to your child's account you may need a registration code, please email me at rhennessy@bcps.org and I will send you your code.
