Room 26 Weekly News

May 2, 2016

Thank you so much to everyone who sent in baby wipes! I think we will be able to make it to the end of the year with (reasonably) clean hands.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in the signature form for Family Life (to be taught the week of May 23.) If you have not yet done so, please ask your child for the information letter that was sent home last week about our upcoming Family Life unit and sign/return the bottom portion to me as soon as possible. All materials for the unit are available for parent review in the Health Office.

This is Dine-Out Week, so put away those pots and pans and help support LCM by going out to eat! If you visit the following restaurants on the following days, they will donate 25% of food and beverage sales to LCM. (Flyers are coming home tomorrow...I'm not sure if you have to bring the flyer or just mention La Costa Meadows. Please look at the paperwork that comes home with your child tomorrow.) Dine outs are as follows:

Monday, May 2nd - Surf Brothers Teriyaki - 2708 Loker Avenue #103, Bressi Ranch

Tuesday, May 3rd - Noodles & Co. - 3410 Via Mercato, Carlsbad (New Vons La Costa Shopping Center)

Thursday, May 5th - Ray's Famous Pizza & Wings - 1691 Melrose Dr, San Marcos, CA 92078

Academic Updates

Language Arts

We are continuing to prepare for our state testing by doing close reads of short texts (fiction and non-fiction) and using them to answer text-dependent questions, including short answer written responses that cite text evidence.

We are finishing up our unit on Measurement and Volume this week. We will use what we've learned about volume to figure out the volume of irregular shapes by breaking them into rectangular components. After that, we will have a brief introduction to graphing coordinates on a plane, and then it will be time for state testing.

We are focusing on the building blocks of matter this week (atoms, molecules, elements, etc.) and moving onto basic chemistry next week. During the week of May 23, all 5th graders will be taking the California Science Test, which will cover topics learned in 2nd through 5th grade, so we will be spending some time reviewing content from the past few years.

Social Studies

Due to the amount of curriculum we need to learn and review in Science, we will be putting Social Studies on hold for a couple of weeks.
