Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the November 26, 2019, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear Southeastern Families:
This week, in our daily announcements, we are speaking with our students about feelings and showing compassion for others. We hope that you can continue these conversations at home as a family. Below is what we shared:
We all want to have friends here at school, but people can have the same or different feelings about the same situation. For example, I might feel scared to climb, and my friend might feel excited. Learning to respect other people's feelings can help us make and keep friends. This week, notice other people's feelings and whether they are the same or different from yours.
Here at our school, we want to put our empathy into action. This is called "showing compassion." When we are able to understand how someone else is feeling and do something to show we understand, we are showing that person compassion. Listening, saying kind words, and helping are three ways to show compassion. Take a moment now to think about how you can show compassion to someone today. Then find a way to do it during the day.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Chastain

Counselor's Corner
Dear Explorer Families:
As a community, we must think of childhood sexual abuse as a preventable disease. Collaboration between educators, parents and guardians, child advocates, the medical community, law enforcement and our communities-at-large can proactively protect our children before abuse ever happens. The Indiana Center for the Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide (ICPYAS, formerly Chaucie’s Place) will be visiting our school the week of January 20th to participate in this collaborative effort. Their body safety curriculum, Child Lures/Teen Lures Prevention, Think First & Stay Safe, will be presented to our students, providing relevant, balanced and proven prevention strategies to families and children, and increasing awareness and knowledge of how to recognize, interrupt, stop and prevent these crimes. There will not be “in person” parent information nights this year. However, there are online resources for you to view. A parent resource video can be found at www.indianaprevention.org and then selecting the “Our Programs” tab at the top right hand of the page. Parent Guides will be distributed to students the week of the presentation. These will be a great resource for facilitating conversations at home. You can also call the ICPYAS office at 317-759-8008 with any specific programming questions not answered in the online parent resources. If you would like to opt your child out of this presentation, please stop by the SES office to fill out the opt out form.

Yearbook Cover Contest
Students can make a front or back cover design that includes our school name and 2019-2020 that reflects who we are at SES. Mrs Getz, our art teacher, will provide paper for interested students. Please put your first and last name, teacher name and grade level on the back. Entries are due no later than Monday, Dec. 2, to Mrs Getz (art teacher). Questions? lgetz@hse.k12.in.us
Lunch Information
Parents, we have implemented a new process in our SES cafeteria. Starting this past Monday, November 18th, we began handing out “think sheets” in our cafeteria for behavior that continues after verbal warnings. The think sheet will detail the incident, and the students will be asked to either write or draw a picture about what happened. The students will then bring the sheet home, and parents are asked to sign and return the think sheet to their child’s teacher the following school day. Parents, please have discussions at home with you students about appropriate cafeteria behavior. Thank you for your assistance!
