Dear Parents,
Here's what's happening at school this week.
English
We will continue our study of grammar and vocabulary through mentor sentences and root words, with a quiz on Friday.
Enrichment Writing
November is National Novel Writing Month. This week, I will invite interested students to participate in NaNoWriMo 2018 by using some of the excellent planning activities available in October. Students set their own word-count goal for November, attempting to complete a novel by November 30. You can learn more here.
Math
This week, students had the opportunity to take a quiz retake. They also focused on division with decimals. Finally, students reviewed for the Chapter 1 test. The chapter 1 test will be on Monday, October 1st and Tuesday, October 2nd. Homework from this week was page 53(2-9)/ page 54(1-6) and page 59(2-9)/page 60 (1-6). This is due on Monday. Once we are finished with the test, students will start Chapter 2: fractions.
Each week, we are spending some time focusing on the metric system. I like to call it our "Metric Moment". My belief is that if we practice this throughout the year, students will have a solid foundation moving forward with the metric system. Also, I also like to incorporate some Geometry throughout the year since it normally is taught in the spring time. Last week, a tree fell down near the school and I was able to grab a couple of pieces of wood from it. We did some math problems involving the metric system and the concept of finding the Volume of a cylinder. This also worked out well because we did some multiplying and dividing with decimals to help solve the math problem. Students figured out the volume of one log and I gave them the weight of it. They then had to predict the weight of the other log based on its volume. Hopefully, students were able to see the interconnected concepts of decimals, volume, and geometry. I took a picture of what we did so that you have a better idea of what your children are working on during their day. Log #1 weighed 28.7 kg and Log #2 weighed 28.3 kg.
Enrichment Math
This week, students learned about multiplying and dividing rational numbers. Students also learned about irrational numbers, and the difference between rational and irrational numbers.

We have the Dune Grass Harvest Service Learning Project coming up this Tuesday 10-2-18. Please see attachment for details. We would love extra hands and eyes if you are able to stop by for part of the day. If you are unable to chaperone we could also use donations of water bottles, chips, cookies (no nuts please), and napkins. Please email or call if you are able to help in anyway. Students should have brought home 2 notes on this for you, but I attached the information again just in case you missed it. Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you so much!!!! apott@rayder.net 547-8177
We are looking at populations in ecosystems and how they effect each other this week. We are also discussing how limited resources can effect population sizes from year to year.
