Eye of the Dragon
John Dewey Academy of Learning * September 25-29, 2017
RESPONSIBILITY
This year we have several students taking courses off-campus throughout the day. Although we love having everyone here, it thrills us to see so many students pursuing exciting adventures outside our building. Earning the privilege to leave campus throughout the day is not an easy task. It means a student has set priorities and successfully accomplished them. It means a student has managed his, her, or their time and reached intended goals. It means they have demonstrated being responsible.
Being responsible isn't always easy. It's not always fun. It can be difficult to do the right thing when other, perhaps easier, opportunities exist. However, being responsible is an important aspect of being a John Dewey student. Our students are responsible for designing their own learning, for challenging themselves and pushing themselves outside their comfort zones, and for encouraging one another when the challenges become difficult.
When our students do all of these things, great things happen. Students improve their self-confidence and self-esteem. They develop important life skills like problem-solving and critical thinking, and they create the type of learning environment where personalized learning is the norm, rather than the exception.
Thanks for choosing to be a dragon! We appreciate you, and we believe in you.
With gratitude,
Jen + the JDAL staff
