We are pleased to announce the 2nd annual School Counselors’ Institute being held on Monday, June 6 through Tuesday, June 7, 2022. This two-day training is specifically designed to meet the needs of school counselors in implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. We are very excited to bring the expertise of Hatching Results to lead school counselors for another year in this interactive and engaging professional development opportunity. School counselors will leave with the tools they need to promote and support the development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program that is data driven to meet the needs of all students.

The School Counselors’ Institute will offer two tracks – beginning and intermediate with either a K-5 or 6-12 focus.


Please note: There is only one registration link regardless of which track participants choose to attend.

CTE Recruitment and Retention for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities: Innovative Strategies from a Panel of Your Peers

The ADE/ESS Secondary Transition Team is excited to announce a virtual professional learning opportunity on Wednesday, March 30 from 2:30–3:30 p.m. for school administrators, school counselors, Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff, and special education staff. Please share with any other stakeholder who is interested in this topic.


CTE Recruitment and Retention for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities: Innovative Strategies from a Panel of Your Peers


How do you increase the inclusion of students with disabilities in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs? Join ADE CTE and Exceptional Student Services staff as they host a conversation with Arizona school districts about their innovative ideas and best practices for CTE recruitment and retention. ADE will also share a resource with recruitment strategies collected from educators, counselors, and administrators statewide during the last year. Prepare to build your recruitment and retention toolbox with fresh ideas used throughout Arizona.


This will be a similar format as the webinar in September. We will showcase four new schools.

Neurosequential Model

ADE/ESS, in partnership with the Neurosequential Model Network led by Dr. Bruce Perry, is pleased to announce two exciting training opportunities for Arizona’s schools: the Neurosequential Model in Education and the Neurosequential Model in Therapeutics training programs. This train-the-trainer, capacity-building process provides educators and therapists with a comprehensive introduction to key concepts related to the developmental impact of trauma on the brain as well as examples and practical application of these concepts in educational settings.


Please view a recording NME NMT 2022 Training Cohort Informational Session to learn more about these professional learning opportunities. This session reviews key information including training content and requirements. Admission into the training series will require viewing of the recorded webinar and an application process. Applications will need to be submitted to Lauren Blocher (email below) by Friday, April 1, 2022. The cost of the training program is $250 per participant.

Google Forms is awesome, but you already knew that. It’s great how responses feed directly into a spreadsheet for easy access and analysis. You can create assessments, surveys, checkout forms, and quizzes for students. You can also poll colleagues, collect information from parents, and keep logs. Arizona Spring Training: FAFSA & College Applications

Mandatory Reporting Trainings - FREE

We are happy to announce that the School Safety Program at the Arizona Department of Education has partnered with Childhelp to host monthly Mandatory Reporting trainings! Childhelp aims to support and advocate for abused, neglected, and at-risk children. There are two training options:


Mandatory Reporting General Training:


  • FREE training that will take approximately one hour and 45 minutes to complete
  • Training Objectives include: Discussing advocacy centers, impacts of child abuse and neglect on child and society, discuss mandatory reporter statutes, provide contact information to law enforcement and Department of Child Safety (DCS), and review the Arizona Multidisciplinary Protocol for the Investigation of Child Abuse (not including tribal areas). This training can be tailored to Tribal Laws, but please indicate to the trainer that you work with students that live on tribal lands, so that she may cover these laws.


Train the Trainer (TTT): Helps build and expand in-house expertise and capabilities to offer Mandated Reporter Training


  • FREE training that will take approximately 3 hours to complete
  • Upon completion of the TTT, participants will be able to train other staff at their school
  • You must register for the training, to obtain a Zoom link. You can add that link to your calendar. Please share training information with anyone that works in schools that may be interested.

Exceptional Student Services (ESS) is soliciting proposals for breakout sessions for Arizona’s 2022 IDEA Conference, Rise Up: Reimagining and Transforming Educational Practices. The audience for this cross-stakeholder event includes special education administrative staff, youth and young adults with disabilities, family members and caregivers, state agency staff, educators, service providers, and community members who share a commitment to positive student outcomes.


Sharing your experience in meaningful planning and implementation will help us to offer hands-on sessions that include practical applications to support the important work of serving students with disabilities.

The Rural College Access and Success Summit

Big picture

One of the few national convenings to focus on rural America, the Summit brings together teachers, principals, superintendents, higher education leaders, legislators, and nonprofit leaders to share ideas and strategies for ensuring that rural youth have the opportunity to successfully transition from high school to college and career.

It will feature keynote speakers Geoff Canada, founder of the Harlem Children's Zone, and Jimmy Wayne, a former foster kid turned award-wining country recording artist. This event will be held from April 24 - 26, 2022.

Indian Country School Counselors Institute

NAU’s Institute for Native-serving Educators is excited to announce a professional learning opportunity designed specifically for School Counselors in Indigenous-serving schools across Arizona! More information, including the full program schedule, is online at www.nau.edu/ine. The Indian Country School Counselors Institute (ICSCI) is an 8-month professional development institute for School Counselors to grow their capacity and effectiveness in working with Indigenous students. Members of the ICSCI cohort will build their capacity to support student wellbeing and success in culturally responsive ways. The program will culminate with each cohort member writing a guidance curriculum unit on a topic of their choosing, which they can use in their schools and which will be published online as a resource for others. Please see the attached flyer for more information; applications are due March 14.

2022 ACTEAZ Summer Conference - Hotel Registration Opens March 14

The ACTEAZ 2022 Summer Conference will be held in person July 15-20, 2022 at the Hilton El Conquistador and Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ.


Conference registration costs $525 and will open in late March. A separate announcement will be sent out once registration is open.


Room rates are $100 per night plus taxes. Hotel registration opens March 14, 2022 at 8:30 a.m.

Teaching AZ CTE Professional Skills with SEL Competencies


Arizona CTE Professional Skills Standards and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies Crosswalk is available for Fall implementation!

Crosswalks compare like sets of standards and provide reasoning/rationale for the resulting alignment to assist teachers in providing a robust learning experience.

This Crosswalk is approved by ADE CTE, School Safety and Social Wellness, and School Counselling to be taught together in CTE classes.

Plan on attending the session at Summer Conference on Sunday July 17 and repeated again on Monday July 18!

Research Opportunity: Elementary Self- and Career-Awareness Study

Future Quest Island-Explorations (FQI-E) is a free online game-based curriculum that promotes college and career awareness, SEL, and self-concept for 3rd to 5th graders. FQI-E is universally designed and accessible to students with disabilities; it uses the evidence-based possible selves framework to help all students understand themselves, set goals, and plan expansive futures.


Program developers are currently enrolling schools in a study to test the effectiveness of FQI-E and get recommendations for program improvements. Participating educators receive early access to the game, coaching on using it in the classroom, and a gift card.


Study participation involves helping distribute and collect parent consent forms (electronic and/or paper), administering 20 minute electronic student pre- and post-surveys, implementing the curriculum (6-10 hours, self-paced), and potentially participating in a focus group.

Student Advisory Council

Applications are due by March 22nd for the Student Advisory Council.


The Student Advisory Council was created under the leadership of Superintendent Hoffman to center students’ voices and improve K-12 education in the state. Twenty students representing grades 5 through 12 will be selected to participate in this advisory council as part of Superintendent Hoffman’s efforts to elevate the voices of students in Arizona.


Students on the Advisory Council will meet with Superintendent Hoffman and other education leaders quarterly to discuss issues such as academics, technology, school safety and provide feedback on their experience as students.

The EMPACT-SPC Crisis Counseling Program (CCP) would like to thank you for all your support over these last 19 months.

Arizona educators are invited to take part in the PAX training series being offered during Spring Break. This is your chance to gain valuable professional development hours, earn prizes, and collaborate with other AZ educators, all from the comfort of your own home!


These fully-funded trainings provide teachers with effective, evidence-based strategies to support the social emotional needs of their students and result in improved behavioral and academic performance.


In a recent survey, 94% of Arizona Educators trained in the PAX Good Behavior Game reported that PAX improved student focus, organization, and confidence.

The Phoenix Zoo is excited to host its Teen Career Conference once

again, an opportunity for teens to explore many different careers in

animal science.


Through specially selected speaker panels, attendees will hear from

experts in Zoology, Conservation, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary

Care working both within the Zoo and in the field. The speakers will

offer insights into their career paths and advice on breaking into their

respective fields.


Representatives from the Zoo and other scientific and educational

institutions from around the Valley will be on hand to offer information

about their programs and opportunities for teens to begin working

toward their careers right now. Volunteer opportunities, camps and

other programs will also be highlighted.


Also included this year are two professional skill-building workshops

designed to offer participants an opportunity to begin building skills

that will benefit their professional knowledge and personal growth.

Foster Care Post-Secondary Resources

Students in foster care may face many challenges during their educational journey. Fortunately, there are a multitude of resources to help this unique population that school staff can tap into.



  • Students in foster care have specific school stability provisions through the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA states that students in foster care have the right to remain in the school they were attending before entering foster care or, if they are already in foster care, the school they were attending before a foster care placement change (this school would be called the school of origin). The premise is that if students in foster care maintain school stability, it would lead to greater educational outcomes.



  • If a student is in foster care after their 13th birthday, that student would be given independent status when filling out the FAFSA and in most cases, receive the full Pell Grant award.


  • If a student is in foster care after their 14th birthday, they would be eligible for the Arizona Tuition Waiver. Once the Pell Grant & other institutional scholarships are applied, the remaining balance of just the tuition costs would be waived for all State universities and colleges. The student could take advantage of this resource until their 23rd birthday


  • If a student is in foster care after their 16th birthday, they would be eligible for the Education and Training Voucher (ETV). These federal funds (up to $5,000 per year) are available for school-related expenses for 5 total years. The student could take advantage of this resource until their 26th birthday.


  • The Fostering Futures Scholarships at Grand Canyon University will begin during the 2022-2023 school year. This scholarship may be utilized by youth currently in foster care (either 17yrs old in DCS care or 18yrs old DCS Voluntary Foster Care or in DCS TILP aftercare program) that have been accepted to GCU or are currently attending GCU. They must be an Arizona resident, enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, must be eligible for the Pell Grant & ETV, will live on-campus, and receive a meal plan.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation General Scholarship is open and accepting applications until April 30, 2022.


The President’s Honor Scholarship is for high school students with a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Eligible students can receive a full in-state tuition scholarship. Inquire with each Maricopa college to determine application deadline.

The National Indian Education Association (NIEA) is collecting information to better assist and provide career and educational opportunities and supports after high school. By filling out our short survey using the button below, your input will help determine and provide better education opportunities to Native American students as they reach for their career, educational, and professional dreams.

Scholarships

AIEF Undergraduate Scholarship Application American Indian Education Fund


Amount of Scholarship: Up to $2,000


Application Deadline: April 4th (If you submit it by March 31st, you can earn an extra point toward your overall score)


Eligibility:

● Native American, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian (student or one parent must be enrolled and have documentation)

● Attending an accredited 2 or 4-year college/university or technical/vocational school

● Must be enrolled as a full-time student

● GPA between 2.0 - 3.5 is desirable, however, ALL current or future undergraduate students are encouraged to apply

● An ACT score of 14 or above is desirable

Online schools and summer programs are not applicable


Purpose: Applications submitted by eligible Native American students each spring are reviewed by members of the Scholarship Committee, who award the competitive grants.

Phoenix AKARMA Foundation


The Phoenix AKARAMA Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is pleased to announce its scholarship program for the 2021-2022 school year. In recent years, the Delta Beta Omega chapter has awarded numerous scholarships ranging from $1000 to $3000. Our preference is to award female, African-American students pursuing higher education, all qualified applicants are welcome to apply.


Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Black Greek-letter organization established in America by African American college women. Our mission is to provide service to all mankind by volunteering our time and resources to a multifaceted program that addresses education, health and wellness, and numerous issues of national and international concern.

Applications for scholarships are now being accepted from qualified students who:


● Are graduating Arizona high school seniors entering a four-year college or university OR

are community college students transferring to a four-year college or university

● Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

● Are interested in careers in education (for the Dr. Peggy L. Payne Memorial Scholarship

only).


Applicants MUST complete the attached application in its entirety.

The deadline for the completed application is Wednesday, March 31, 2021, with all supporting materials listed below submitted online:


● A cover letter and resume that details your school and community leadership and/or involvement.

● A social media bio of 150 characters or less

● A photo (no-selfies) no larger than 4x6.

● Your double-spaced essay with your name in the upper left corner.

● Two letters of recommendation: One from a teacher, guidance counselor, and/or extracurricular advisor AND one from a person in the community (i.e. pastor, employer).

● An unofficial transcript from the registrar’s office, which indicates class rank, grade point average, (optional SAT or ACT scores if available)

● Additional typed sheets to specific questions within the application with name in the upper left corner.
