Lunchroom Requirement Reminders
Just a reminder that our lunch staff have Federal requirements that they must follow when serving lunch. The lunch staff have gone through training in order to understand the rules and regulations. They are to OFFER versus SERVE. That means students are required to take a specific combination of 3 items. For example, a student that took a milk, tacos and a salad has met the requirements. There is what is called a 3rd person role on the lunch team. This person's responsibility is to be the last person in the serving line to look over every tray before the student goes to sit.
Many times as adults we might think the student does not have enough food or we might want them to try something new in case they end up liking it. We have to fight that urge once the child sits down. Remember, once the food has been "served" it cannot go back to the cart if they don't eat it. The regulations indicate that it must be thrown away. IF a student has forgotten something or changes their mind about something, please do NOT come up to the cart to get it for them. I too am guilty of that. :( Please teach your students to raise their hand and ask the lunch staff working the floor for what they might need. The lunch staff will bring it to them if needed. Sometimes the students go through too quickly and need to slow down. Thank you for your help in this area.

Restorative Conversations
One of the most important things we can do when working with behavior is find a way to restore the relationship. Here are some questions to consider once the student is ready and calm enough to talk.
1. What Happened?
2. What were you thinking at the time?
3. What were you feeling when this was happening?
4. Do you think this was an appropriate action or reaction?
5. Who do you think has been affected by your actions?
6. What do you need to do to fix this?
7. How can we make sure this doesn't happen again?
Something to consider......there doesn't need to be a consequence for everything. I will send you an electronic copy so you have it if you choose to try it out.
