Learner Profile for March
The learner profile that is being highlighted during the month of March is the character trait of being a communicator. Students exhibiting this trait understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration.
Language Workshop
We finished Unit 5, Investigation, with the story Shark Lady, the true story of renowned shark researcher Eugenie Clark. We then moved onto Unit 6. In this new unit we will be highlighting how characters grow over time. We will be analyzing how authors and illustrators depict the growth of the characters in each book. We will come to learn that characters grow in many ways. The first two stories we read involved the same characters. In the first story, Maple, we meet sisters Maple and Willow as they are first born. In the second book, Maple and Willow Together, the girls are a bit older. We come to learn more about each girl and the relationship they have with one another.
Literacy
March has traditionally been the time to celebrate the many wonderful stories written by Dr. Seuss. West High School students came to read to our kindergartners on March 2, the anniversary of his birthday. We then took time in the following days to explore many Seuss stories. We changed focus and spent time again with nonfiction text, identifying the main idea and supporting details. We have been working on recognizing letters that are vowels and distinguishing long and short sounds for each vowel. We then used that knowledge to write CVC words. These are words that consist of a consonant, vowel, consonant, such as bat, dig, mop, run, etc. We practiced identifying and creating words belonging to the “-at” family. By changing the first consonant we can create new words (cat becomes hat, mat or rat). We briefly revisited syllables and producing our own rhymes for common words. We are in the final stretch of the school year. Many students have learned most of the kindergarten high frequency words. Proficiency for this time of the year is at least 25 words. Being able to read these words is instrumental for success in reading grade level text. How is your child doing?
High Frequency Words
There are 40 high frequency words that kindergarten students in the School District of Waukesha are expected to be able to read by the end of the school year. To stay on track for mastery of all 40 words, it is recommended that students be able to read 25 or more words at this time of year. Have you checked lately to see how is your child doing? Did he/she meet this goal?
To help you practice the words with your child at home we have included the document below. The highlighted words are those we have worked on at school. We will update the list as new words are introduced.
Math Workshop
We have been investigating measurement in Math. The children had the opportunity to practice describing how objects can be measured. We worked with length and weight. The students compared objects, describing them as longer or shorter, heavier or lighter. We were able to do this in a variety of ways. We did this in small groups, independently, and on the i-pad. We even watched a cute math video that introduced real-world applications for measurement. In addition to measurement, we continued to practice addition and subtraction, correct writing of numbers, and composing and decomposing numbers. We also worked on counting on or counting back from a certain number. Finally, we analyzed the teens to recognize they are comprised of one group of 10 and some more.
Mark your calendars!
Students will be dismissed at 1:40 on Thursday, March 29. That will mark the beginning of our Spring Break. There is no school on Friday. March 30, nor the following week. School will be back in session on Monday, April 9. Have a wonderful break!
Rose Glen online directory
Another important reason you may want to be included in the directory is to give your child the opportunity to be invited to birthday parties or other gatherings with classmates, since neither the teachers nor the office staff is able to share contact information with you. Hopefully you have already signed up for the family directory. If you have not, please take a few minutes to do so.
