Welcome to Year 2

Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely half term.

This next half term in year two is always such a busy one. As well as the exciting learning that is taking place in the classroom, the children will be rehearsing ready for our Year 2 Christmas Carol Concert!

At the end of the last half term we celebrated National Parents Week and invited parents and carers in to see how well their child was doing at school. Thank you to everyone who could make it, the feedback was very positive. We are really proud of the children's achievements and we look forward to you seeing how much progress your child has made by the January parents evening!

Our ongoing topic

Our topic for this half term continues to be Fire and Ice. Here is a summary of what the children will be learning across the curriculum.

Literacy

Over this half term the children will listen to various types of poems and learn how to create their own blackout poem. We will focus on characters, settings and story language through our key text of Lost and Found (Oliver Jeffers) and create an alternative version of the story. Dougal's Deep Sea Adventure (Simon Bartram) will be our key text when we investigate the features of a diary and this will help us to write our own.

Mathematics

Every day the children will continue to develop their mental calculation methods, spotting the patterns and relationships between numbers. We will develop our knowledge of time through the use of analogue and digital clocks before moving the learning on to focus on multiplication, division and introducing the column method for calculations.

Topic

Our topic lessons will continue to be themed around Fire & Ice. We will be developing our scientific enquiry skills - creating a question to investigate, how to conduct the experiment in order to answer our question and interpreting the results. We are looking forward to creating our own maps and how the aerial view is so important. We will become gamers in computing! This is where they will predict, unpick and test algorithms.

How can you help?

Mental Math Minutes! Can you give your child maths calculations to solve and see how many they can do in a minute? Record the total and try to beat the score!

Visit a local library and find books about your child's hobbies and things that interest them. Can you find a story book and an information book and compare them? Can you think of an alternative ending for the story?

Practice the spellings sent home.
