Reading Workshop

In second grade, there is a huge focus on reading and writing. My passion is reading and literacy. My personal goal each year is to help the children grow as independent readers and writers and to develop a love for books and reading that can last a lifetime!

Every day in 2nd grade our readers:

  • have time to read just-right books independently;
  • select their own appropriate books;
  • are reading authentic literature;
  • have daily opportunities to talk about their books in genuine ways;
  • don't just read the words but also understand the story; and
  • work in different sized groups (i.e. independent, small group, whole group).

Author Study - Kevin Henkes

Each month we will be focusing on one author to study. In the beginning of the school year, second graders fall in love with Kevin Henkes books over and over again. Kevin Henkes has an unremarkable ability in capturing real-life childhood issues in a humorous but practical manner. You can learn more about Kevin Henkes at or an inside look on youtube at In September, we will be reading Wemberly Worried, Owen, Chrysanthemum, A Weekend With Wendell, Chester's Way, just to name a few.

Every Monday, your child will go home with a homework packet that will be due on every Friday. The time expectation each night should not exceed 15 to 20 minutes of spelling, writing, or math practice. In addition, your child will be expected to practice their reading skills every night for 20 minutes. There will be one take-home project due each trimester that corresponds with our curriculum.

Book Orders

I will send home book orders occasionally. The book orders provide a great opportunity to buy books at your child’s reading level and they also make wonderful gifts. Each book you purchase allows our classroom an opportunity to get a free book over time. This can be done easily online at or you can send in the order form to the classroom with a check in a sealed envelope.
