Reading/Daily 5
The students really enjoyed our visits to the Book Fair this week. When you see a member of our PTO, please thank them...they are purchasing a $5 book for each student from the Book Fair! Of course we met in our reading groups this week to work on basic literacy skills, one of which was reading with expression. We also talked about syllables and read a new story about a frog named Pat. Keep reading and writing at home using the list of sight words sent home in their binders a couple of weeks ago. This week was a review week for sight words, so I will send a new list home when we've added more.
Math
Math class this week focused on counting to and writing numbers 21-31. Along with this came learning to count by tens and identifying the tens and ones places of numbers so that we could make groups of ten objects and then quickly figure out how many there were in the set. This came very easily for some and a little more difficult for most, so we also switched up the format of our math class this week and some of the students did more independent work and self checking their work with their peers. Another fun addition we made to our math time is the math app, IXL. IXL is a great program that students use on their iPads. It allows me to assign individual students skills to work on and it is a great way for me to individualize math instruction to meet each student's needs.
