PHS Staff Update

April 27th, 2015

On the Edge of May!

Welcome to the last week before the 90 days of May! I am out on a WASC visit Monday and Tuesday, but all will be well. We do have a staff meeting on Monday. We will update on a few items, and spend some time discussing how the Professional Learning Community work is coming along. I also ask that you consider our impending iPad rollout. It is a deep and confounding challenge! I welcome the smart ideas I'm sure some of you have about ways to do this most effectively.

The link below connects to the district sketch of the plan, but can serve as a place to post an idea you may have. We will be working with you and the district on this in the next couple of weeks:

Welcome to Gary Callahan, our new superintendent-to-be!

Starting July 1st, Gary Callahan will take on the responsibility of leading PCS into the future. I had a chance to sit down with him this weekend and talk about Petaluma High, his vision for the district, and his sense of where education is headed. I was impressed by his intelligence, scope of experience, and genuine understanding of the challenges we all face. Gary is attempting an ambitious Around the District in 8 Hours on Tuesday. He is scheduled to be at PHS between 2 and 3pm. He plans to say hello to office staff, stop by a classroom or two and then move on. If you are free, come on by the main office during that time. If not, I am confident that you'll have a chance to meet him soon.

Don't forget to reserve your seat for the Spring play this year, Cinderella. Please support all the students and staff who have worked so hard to create this production by coming and enjoying the show! (Opening night: April 30th), May 1st, May 2nd; May 7th, 8th, 9th. Doors at 7PM, Show @7:30PM. Don't miss it!

Two Lacrosse Paddles: One Great Night!

On a cool Wednesday evening last week, Petaluma Varsity Boys and Girls Lacrosse made a little history. In the first CIF lacrosse games played on home territory at Ellison Field, both teams overcame strong challenges from the visitors from Casa Grande to claim the Battle of the Paddle.

First, the boys withstood a strong second half surge by the Gauchos, pulling away at the end for a 13-8 victory. Then in a true nail biter, the girls held on for an 11-10 victory. Both squads are looking strong as they head toward playoffs. Congrats to Kevin and Sarah, our fine coaches!

Athletics Heading for Playoff Time

Boys Varsity Lacrosse sports a shiny record as they head toward playoff time. The boys bring a 14-2, 6-0 record into their final two league games against Cardinal Newman and Windsor this week. They are ranked 49th in the state and 9th in the North Coast. Meanwhile, the girls have had two fine wins over crosstown rival Casa Grande. They bring a 3-6 overall record into the season's final week.

Trojan baseball (6-1) takes on rival Analy this Tuesday and Healdsburg Friday. They don't want to be caught looking ahead to a possible showdown with league leader Sonoma (6-0) next Tuesday.

Trojan softball had a strong 4-1 victory over Analy last Thursday. They take a 16-2 record into this week's match up vs. Healdsburg. This group is gearing up for a deep playoff run.

Our track and field team had a series of great efforts at the recent elite Santa Rosa Twilight meet. Ty Pearson took gold at 300M hurdles and third in the 110M hurdles; Jessica O'Hanlon (800M) and Madison Parratt (1600M) each took home silvers. Katya Williges and Natalie Gilmore were strong in the high jump and pole vault, while Dan Curren dominated in the men's pole vault. As we head toward the SCL final meet, these standouts along with Allison Scranton, Morgan Giraud, and others have PHS well-positioned for some strong post-season results.
