Girls Tennis
WEEEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS my friends ... and by that I mean the 2021 IHSAA Girls Tennis SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS!!
... and WEEEEEEEEEEEE'LL KEEP ON FIGHTING 'TIL THE END! The Lady Brickies FOUGHT HARD for this one - their 3rd title in a row and 9th in school history!
Here's the recap:
Wednesday - 1st Round vs. Hammond Academy of Science & Technology
If the Hawks had any notion of pulling a possible upset, the Lady Brickies SQUASHED it quickly! Hobart dropped just 1 game the entire match and CRUISED into the semifinal round with an easy 5-0 victory!
Thursday - 2nd Round (semifinals) vs. Andrean
On paper, this one probably looked like it would be close, but the Lady Brickies were STRAIGHT BUTTER as they ROLLED over the 59ers 4-1 earning 2-set victories across the board! The 4-1 win margin matched what Hobart did to Andrean back on May 6th ... looks like the second verse was same as the first! :)
Friday - 3rd Round (CHAMPIONSHIP TIME BABY!)
On April 21st, the Merrillville Lady Pirates came to town for a regular season match-up. In the snow ... yes, I said snow, the Lady Brickies earned a hard fought 3-2 win. Would the second verse be same as the first again? Naaaaaaa ... the 2nd verse was even better this time! The #1 doubles team of seniors Lauren Cicillian and Katrina Hansen set the tone early by DOMINATING their Merrillville counterpart 6-0, 6-1! Next it was junior Emma Novak at #2 singles who completely DISMANTLED her opponent 6-1, 6-0 to bring H-town to the doorstep of another title. Senior Addison Kasch played brilliantly at #1 singles, but lost a tough match to Sydney Jackson of Merrillville, a semi-state qualifier in 2019, to make it 2-1 Lady Brickies. When the #2 doubles crew of seniors Emma Lewis & Hayley Borman defeated their opponent 6-1, 6-3 ... VICTORY WAS OURS!! The celebration had to wait about 10 minutes as junior Aoife Combs was still battling in the 2nd set at #3 singles. After reaching duece on match point about 50 times, Aoife FINALLY WON the point to WIN THE MATCH (6-3, 6-4) and give Hobart a 4-1 final margin for the TITLE!!
The Lady Brickies are now just like the Chicago Bulls of the 90s ... a 3-peat CHAMPION! Hobart ... with a record of 14-5 ... advances to face Whiting in the IHSAA REGIONAL at Munster High School on Tuesday! To quote Head Coach Kenny Walsh ... "LET'S GOOOOOOOO!!!!!"

2021 IHSAA SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS
Baseball
On Thursday, Hobart traveled to Kouts for a non-conference match-up with the Mustangs. Facing a future NCAA D1 pitcher is never easy, but the Brickies were up to the task! After manufacturing two 1st inning runs, our boys scored in the top of the 4th to break a 2-2 tie and then added two more for good measure in the top of the 7th to earn a sweet 5-2 VICTORY!! Junior Marc Enslen went 2-for-2 and collected 2 RBI to lead the offensive attack for Hobart! Sophomore Kyle Feterick also notched two hits at the plate ... classmate Cam Gonzalez pitched 6 strong innings to earn the win ... and senior Gavin Gallagher came on in relief and struck out the side in the bottom of the 7th to close it out!! YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOOAAAAAAAAARD ... YESSSSSSSS!!
Friday night, Hobart drove West on US 30 to St. John to face Lake Central, the DAC champs and #1 team in the area. Our boys BATTLED ... but the LC D-D-D-DEFENSE was stellar playing behind arguably the toughest pitcher the Bricks have faced all season. Lake Central held Hobart without a hit and scored 4 in the bottom of the 5th to hand us a tough 10-0 loss.
Saturday morning was "bounce back time" as the Brickies closed out a busy week with a morning contest against the Morton Governors. Gallagher was once again on the mound and he was MAGNIFICENT as the Govs could only muster two hits in 5 innings! After not registering a single hit on Friday at LC, the Brickie bats EXPLODED for 14 on Saturday morning that led to 16 runs and an easy VICTORY!! Freshmen Jevan Andrews & Thomas Martin ... senior Ryan Ellis ... junior Kaidin Click and Feterick all collected 2 hits for Hobart in the win! The win was the 7th of the season for Gallagher! The post-game celebration also included a special ceremony for outgoing head coach Bob Glover Jr. Coach Glover will be assuming a new role within the SCOH starting next year as he was approved as our new Business Manager in April. Former players and coaches returned to honor his dedicated effort, focused determination, and selfless service to the Hobart Baseball program over these last 12 years as head coach. Amassing 195 wins versus only 123 losses, Coach Glover led the 2014 team to the school's first sectional title since 1993!
As nice as it was to recognize Coach Glover after impeaching the Governors 16-0, these boys actually still have some WORK WORK WORK to do. Hobart is currently 17-10 with one regular season game left ... Monday at home vs. Griffith. Sectional play begins THURSDAY for the Brickies as they face arch rival Andrean. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!!

THANK YOU COACH GLOVER!

Track & Field
Post-season excitement was in the air as this was SECTIONAL WEEK for both the boys and girls tracksters. In order to advance to the REGIONAL in track & field, individuals or relays must place in the top 3 places at the sectional OR be one of the next 4 fastest times/marks of all sectionals entering the regional. Competing in the toughest sectional in the "219", the Brickies were FANTASTIC and are sending a strong contingent to next week's REGIONAL!
On Tuesday at Lowell High School, the Lady Brickies finished 6th overall and will be sending 3 INDIVIDUALS and 2 RELAYS to the Portage Regional on Tuesday! Senior Anisha Lewis was OUTSTANDING as she qualified in BOTH the 100 (5th) and 200 (3rd) meter dash along with running a leg on the 1600m relay team (5th)! Junior Dominique Clemons got in on the action as well and will join her teammate in the 200! Freshman Cailey Weber placed 4th in the 300m hurdles with a LIFETIME BEST performance to qualify!!
The relays that qualified are listed below:
3200m Relay - senior Lilly Butler, junior Mikayla Fuentes and freshmen Ella Hornak & Kylee King ... ran a SEASON BEST by 49 seconds, which is an average of 12 seconds per runner! AMAZING!!
1600m Relay - senior Anisha Lewis, sophomores Asia Donald & Sarah Romeo, and freshman Ella Hornak
Boys
On Thursday at Crown Point High School, the Brickies placed 6th overall and are sending 4 INDIVIDUALS and 2 RELAYS to the Crown Point Regional on Thursday! Senior Riley Johnston was FLYING HIGH in the pole vault to a height of 15'8" to claim his 3rd straight IHSAA SECTIONAL TITLE!! Riley is a 2-time state qualifier in the pole vault, finished 3rd overall in 2019, and currently holds the NCC record in the event ... and is also like the 90s Chicago Bulls, a 3-PEAT CHAMPION! Senior classmate Bruce Leipart qualified in BOTH relays and in the 800m run! Fellow mid-distance phenom freshman Ryan Mattel will join Leipart in BOTH relays and the 800! WOW!! The final individual qualifier for the Brickies is sophomore Cody Johnston, who will join older brother Riley at the regional after placing 2nd at the sectional with a LIFETIME BEST vault of 15'4"!! HOLY SCHNIKES THAT'S HIGH!!
The relays that qualified are listed below:
3200m Relay - senior Bruce Leipart, junior Joe Meagher and freshmen Jacob Ramirez & Ryan Mattel ... placed 3rd with a SEASON BEST time of 8:28.12!
1600m Relay - seniors Bruce Leipart & Julian Ruiz and freshmen Jacob Ramirez & Ryan Mattel
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THE BRICKIES BATTLING AT THE IHSAA REGIONALS THIS WEEK!

Softball
The final week of the regular season kept our girls busy and enabled them to experience a little bit of everything. A Monday showdown with area top 10 ranked Munster to close out the conference schedule ... a Wednesday road trip north of Ridge Road ... and a chance to play on an NCAA field!
Wednesday, Hobart took a yellow bus just north of 37th Ave. to square off with Lake Station. The Eagles were just what the doctor ordered after a tough loss! The Lady Brickies got it going early and often on offense ... scoring in EVERY INNING en route to a DOMINANT 16-0 VICTORY!! A trio of seniors combined on the shutout pitching performance ... Saylem Smith, Hannah Camarena and Neely Fisk struck out 10 batters and didn't walk a soul in the win! Led by freshman Keirys Click's 4-for-5 showing at the plate, Hobart BELTED 17 total hits as a team and CRUISED to their 15th win of the year!!
On Thursday, the Lady Brickies were originally scheduled to host Valparaiso in the final home game of the regular season. In an effort to make the last one a little more special, the game was moved to Dowling Park in Hammond where Hobart got to play on the home turf of Purdue Northwest (future landing spot of senior Saylem Smith)!! Televised on RSN, this one was worth the price of admission as both squads played EXCEPTIONAL in the field and kept spectators on the edge of their seats in a pitcher's duel! Freshman Ella Hornak, classmate Morgan Ellenberger, and Peterson held the Lady Vikes to only 2 runs for the game! Unfortunately, Hobart couldn't find much rhythm at the plate and only scored 1 in the 2-1 defeat. Click collected 2 of the Lady Brickies' 5 hits and sophomore Kylee Watts scored our lone run.
Hobart finished the regular season at 15-12 overall and will begin IHSAA Sectional play @ Crown Point High School NEXT TUESDAY against Portage. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Boys Golf
With most of our spring sports navigating the post-season, the Brickie golf team is finally hitting its proverbial stride. Our boys still have time to find their "A" game before sectional play begins in 2 weeks ... and this past week gave them plenty of chances!
On Wednesday, Hobart hosted LaCrosse for SENIOR NIGHT! They played on the White Course @ River Point and shot a SEASON BEST 203 as a team!! Unfortunately, LaCrosse was practically throwing darts out there and left town with the W after shooting a blistering 194. Still, our boys SHINED! Senior Logan Kingery and freshman Parker Glass led the charge with 47s and senior Chad Tomaga (54) & junior Ethan Cover (55) rounded out the Hobart top 4.
The 47 posted by Glass was his SEASON BEST!
On Saturday morning, Hobart traveled to West Lake County for the Lake Central Invitational. Palmira Golf Course in St. John tends to play long ... especially on a hot sunny day like yesterday. The Brickies played through and finished 16th out of 17 schools competing with a total team score of 444 over 18 holes. Glass was the low scorer for Hobart with a 107. Cover & Tomaga each completed the course in 109 strokes and Snemis finished with a 119.
Tuesday is the NCC Championship at White Hawk. Be the ball guys ... be the ball.
