SMEF Distinguished Alumni
The San Marcos Education Foundation celebrated and recognized four outstanding San Marcos High School Alumni at their annual Distinguished Alumni ceremony on Friday, October 20. This years Young Alumni Recipient is Mrs. Stephanie Munoz. Mrs. Munoz graduated in 2007 and is currently serving as the Chief of Human Resources for San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District. Stephanie Reyes, SMHS class of 1996, was named the first Female City Manager for the City of San Marcos in February of 2023. Mr. Perez graduated from SMHS in 2000 and currently holds the position of Regional Manager for Hugo Boss. Last, is our very own Mayor of San Marcos, Ms. Jane Hughson. Mayor Hughson graduated from SMHS in 1972 and has served as Mayor since 2018. Congratulations Class of 2023 Distinguished Alumni recipients!
Miller Champs Day
On Thursday, October 19, Miller Middle School celebrated their Rattlers who have shown good behavior to start the school year with Champs Day. Thursday afternoon was full of fun activities with dancing, sports, board games, movies, and outdoor games.
2023 TXST Mathworks Math Contest
The Mathworks Math Contest (MMC) is a free contest! Middle school students are eligible (grades 6 - 8) and will be able to explore mathematics and be challenged by high-level problems. All participants are invited to apply to the Mathworks Residential Junior Summer Math Camp (JSMCR).
Showing Our Unity
San Marcos CISD halls and classrooms were filled with orange on Wednesday, October 18 for Unity Day, which emphasizes the importance of kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Unity Day also serves as a reminder that bullying is not acceptable, and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community.
A Ballet Blast At Hernandez
Our Hernandez Heroes are showing off their ballet skills, and having a blast during Ballet Club. Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd graders are taking part in this fun club where they’re learning multiple dance routines. Thank you to Mrs. Jones for leading our Heroes in this fun club!
Scholar Athlete of the Week
Congratulations to SMHS Senior Fabian Castaneda who was named a Scholar Athlete of the Week by Dave Campbell's Texas Football! He was presented a scholarship by In-N-Out Burger a pep rally on Thursday, October 19.
San Marcos Explorers Visit Crockett
San Marcos Explorers, a project through Texas State University's Office of Sustainability, is teaching Crockett 5th graders the importance of wildlife conservation and outdoor safety. Superstars spent the morning of Tuesday, October 17 learning about keeping litter out of nature and leaving no trace behind while hiking and camping outdoors.
Rattler Musicians Perform Together
Goodnight and Miller Middle School's orchestra programs came together to host a combined concert on Tuesday, October 17 at San Marcos High School's Performing Arts Center. Our Rattler musicians played a crowd favorite with the theme from Ghostbusters, as well as pop hits from Coldplay and Katy Perry. Congrats middle school orchestras on an outstanding performance!
October is Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month
October is Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month to increase awareness of the dangers of fentanyl and potential overdoses. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is coordinating with our state agency partners to raise awareness about the impact of fentanyl in Texas and to provide resources targeted to school personnel, students, and families who we serve. School systems can strategically collaborate with other community-based organizations in the statewide effort to prevent harm from this dangerous drug for school personnel, students, and their families.
Mendez Strikes Out Cyberbullying
David’s Legacy Foundation visited Mendez Elementary on Wednesday, October 18 for two presentations on the importance of preventing cyberbullying. Mrs. Diana Dodson led the informative presentations where she taught our Strikers the importance of being an Upstander – a person who speaks or acts in support of someone when they are being bullied. Mrs. Dodson also gave all in attendance an anti-bullying wristband to emphasize their importance in the world. Thank you Mrs. Dodson for helping our Strikers remember that bullying isn't tolerated.
Tricks, Treats and Diamonds
De Zavala Elementary's PTO hosted a Fall Festival on Thursday, October 19, featuring an evening full of games, food, a trunk or treat, and a haunted hallway and school bus. Our Diamond students and staff also made sure to dress in their favorite Halloween costumes for this fun event!
Goodnight AVID Students Visit Concordia University
Sixth Grade AVID students at Goodnight Middle School took a field trip to visit Concordia University on Thursday, October 19. Goodnight Rattlers were able to tour the campus while taking part in a scavenger hunt. Our students also learned about the admissions process.
Squirmy Good Time At Mendez
Mendez 2nd graders put on a performance that would make you squirm on Thursday, October 19. With songs about snakes and bats, their "Squirm" musical was a hit! Congratulations Strikers on an outstanding performance.
Focusing On Learning
San Marcos CISD hosted a professional learning day on Friday, October 20. Educators and staff came together to expand their knowledge and skills on the use of high-quality instructional materials, with a focus on innovation, collaboration, and student-centered learning.
SMHS Choir Continues To Shine
San Marcos High School’s choir program continues to shine. Twenty–nine singing Rattlers took Pre-Areart in the second stage of the All–State Choir audition process and made a Region Choir ensemble. Additionally nine of our Rattlers qualified for the Pre–Area round of All–State Choir audition process, which will take place on November 29. Congratulations to these students for their hard work:

NASA Saturday
A group of SMHS students took part in NASA/Future Aerospace Engineers and Mathematicians Academy (FAMA) Activity Saturday – an integrated year-round STEM program for high school students. Our Rattlers spent the day learning how to use computer software for 3D printing. They're working toward participating in an event where they'll design wheels for lunar rovers.
