History
Dance styles originating from African American were referred to as jazz previous to the 1950's. Now, jazz is related to the general genre of tap dance; jazz music and tap dance was predominant during the 50's. Popular forms of jazz include: Cake Walk, Charleston, and Black Bottom.

Katherine Dunham influenced jazz by using Caribbean traditional dance. Jazz as a performance art was popularized by Bob Fosse.

Description
Jazz is a broad range of dance styles. Improvisation was an important element in the early development of jazz. Typically, jazz dancing is performed while jazz music is playing. Tap dancing is also referred to as jazz dancing.
