Nuclear Waste

What is Nuclear Waste?

  • Material that nuclear fuel becomes after used in a reactor
  • Can be used in making of nuclear bombs

Radioactive Isotopes (Unstable Elements)

  • Degrade over time
  • Give off energy - dangerous for living organisms
  • Some of this energy can be recycled and used

Plutonium 239

  • Man-Made from nuclear reactors (Nuclear Waste)
  • Used in production of nuclear bombs
  • Half-life - 24,000 years (How long it take to lose half of the energy from material)

16 grams of Plutonium - 239 were produced by a foreign nation to create a nuclear bomb. How long would it take for the material to degrade to .05 grams?
