Writing for a Purpose

We will have a writing workshop approach integrating grammar and more. That means that students will write everyday, will often choose what they write about and what form of writing they create. I will model and share great writing, teach writing mini lessons to help students to grow as writers, and encourage peer editing and peer evaluating. We will write narratives, informational pieces, and persuasive writings.

We will write authentically creating our own personal news letter where we will share what is happening in our classroom, community, and more. Students will create stories and conduct interviews, find images, revise and edit our posts. Eventually I envision us moving to video interview scripts and video newscasts using a green screen in our media center incorporating various types of stories, etc.

We will spend a lot of time in books during out English class. We will share books from the perspective of an author rather than a reader. I want to show students what writers do and how they do it effectively. I will share picture books, poems, news articles, book reviews, and all forms of writing with your children as I teach them to have a passion for writing and how books can serve as writers' best tools! If you want your child to grow as a reader and writer, nothing is more important than a passion for reading and writing everyday!

Word Work

This year students will do Wordly Wise 3000 online. Lessons will include pre-assessments, biweekly activities, application of words, breaking apart words and learning word parts, word use in context, post-assessments, and evaluation of learning by students as they see which words they have mastered and have yet to master.
