Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I hope the winter break was pleasant and relaxing. We are back to work on January 2 with energy and enthusiasm to finish the first semester of this school year on January 18 and then begin our second semester.
At Burnside, we use PBIS, a proactive approach schools use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment. At Burnside, we work hard to be safe, kind, and responsible and we talk about this daily in our morning announcements and within our classrooms. Thank you for helping to reinforce SAFE, KIND, and RESPONSIBLE.
Please reach out with any concerns or questions.
Take good care,
Jennifer Grove

Kevin Holm, Master Educator
Mr. Kevin Holm will retire after over 33 years of service to Red Wing Public Schools. Mr. Holm knows that learning IS fun, and every day he has worked to make it fun for all of the students that he has impacted. From his costumes to running trench to outrageous and LOUD read alouds, Burnside will miss him very much and we wish him happiness and contentment with his next steps. Mr. Holm’s last day with students will be January 18, 2024.
Can you find Mr. Holm in the first photo? He was here on the Opening Day of Burnside in 1994! I'm sure you can find him and some of our other favorite teachers, too.
In the second photo, Mr. Holm is seen enticing his current second graders for the read aloud they will be listening to when they get back to class.
Why It's Important to be at School on Time
Students arriving to school with time to spare are able to settle in, get their breakfast, greet their teachers and classmates, and focus their minds on the lessons to come. Students arriving late miss out on this natural transition period, and chronic tardiness may cause students to struggle with academic focus and relationships with peers.
Showing up on time to school every day can help students develop the habit of being punctual and it shows them your commitment to their learning and friendships. Being on time also helps reduce classroom interruptions and distractions for all students. Missing just 15 minutes of school twice a week equates to 3 missed school days per year!
Being on time helps your child's teacher and classmates AND your child. If you would like tips on developing or working on your family's morning routine, please reach out to Jane Wassink, at jewassink@rwps.org. She has a lot of experience and sound advice for us to take advantage of.
Bus Information & Assistance Needed
You can track your child's bus this year by downloading the FirstView app and entering the code 6PD6.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The primary concern of every employee in this district is the safety and welfare of each student. Behavior on school buses is a concern that affects not only every student on that bus, but the bus driver and individuals in other vehicles. Additionally, we are having issues with finding bus dirvers.
Recently we have seen an uptick in behavior referrals on the bus, specifically on your child’s bus. During the last week before break, we had a bus meeting for Bus 33 and Bus 85 to review expectations and outline consequences for misbehavior. Additionally, there were behavior concerns on Bus 76 with standing in the aisles.
At Burnside, we work to be safe, kind, and responsible. On the bus, this looks like:
Be Safe
Body to self and belongings to self
Follow directions
Stay seated facing forward
Cross in front of the bus
Be Kind
Voice Level 0-2
Use kind words
Be Responsible
Keep belongings in backpack
Watch for your stop
Line up quickly
Ask for help
We need your support in making the safety of all students a priority. Please review these expectations with your child(ren). Your cooperation in maintaining positive behavior on buses will benefit every individual.
Thank you for helping us be safe, kind, and responsible.
