Aztec Update September 18, 2022

Principal's letter for parents and caregivers

6th week of school; No School Monday, first grading period ends Sept 23

Good evening Aztecs

Last week was an amazing week at Azusa High School. We had our first all school in the gym rally in over 2 years. Our first coffee with the principal was well attended in the morning and in the afternoon. Our Lady Aztec Volleyball team continued their winning streak in league against Duarte and Gladstone (2-0 league, 9-5 overall) Our Aztec football team has improved to 4-0 with a 40-7 win against Glendale HS last Friday night. Our main office is getting new paint and a new floor this week. There is always more we can do to get better, but we are starting the year off right here in Azusa!

New Counselor has started and change in counselor breakdown

Laura Ortiz has officially joined the Aztec counseling team and here is the new breakdown.

  • Last names: A - D: Jackie Hoke

  • Last names E - K: Laura Ortiz

  • Last names L - Q: Ana Sanchez

  • Last names R - Z: Crystal Mejia

These counselor changes take effect on Monday morning. There will be some adjusting for everyone to get used to new counselors, but within 1-2 weeks it should be okay. With this change each counselor provides guidance to approximately 300 students.

New Teachers Hired

We have added the following permanent teachers to our faculty recently:

Andrew Kleger (English) started on September 6

Christopher Lam (English) started on September 12

Frida Gomez (Math) will start on September 19

Todd Martin (SPED) will start on September 19

We now have all of our classrooms being taught by permanent teachers. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Notes from Coffee with the Principal (Sept 14)

Coffee with the principal presentations from Sept 14 have been posted to the school website in English and in Spanish. During the meetings, parents had questions about school safety this year and next year, traffic around the school, kitchen and cafeteria capacity, air conditioning in the cafeteria and some classrooms, when the exterior of the school will be improved, and how many teachers and staff will AHS have in the 2023-2024 school year. I am working with the district to plan a smooth transition for next year. We remain committed to student safety and improving the facilities and learning environment at Azusa HS.

A few reminders

The year is starting to get in full swing. If you haven't had a chance to talk about grades with your students at home, please do. If you are concerned about your student's progress please reach out to teachers or your student's counselor.

Seniors are about to become very busy with college applications, so if you have a senior, please be on the lookout for FAFSA and college application deadlines! October and November are very important months for seniors.

Thank you and have a fantAZTEC week,
