Powell Publisher
March 23-27, 2020
Powell Parents,
Thank you for your positive comments and response to the activities and communication we have sent out so far. I want to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to our Powell parents who work in the health care and grocery industries. We can't thank you enough for your service to our community!
We are excited about kicking off this first week of learning from home!
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM US?
Starting today, we will be operating our campus remotely. We are all trying to do our part to social distance ourselves. We will operate from 8:00am-3:00pm every day and teachers will be conducting "office hours" daily from 9:00-10:00 am.. These "office hours" are when the staff is available to respond to you within that hour. Outside of their office hours, they are still working 8:00am -3:00pm but the response time may be delayed.
If you have questions for any staff member, we encourage you to email them directly. If you have office, administration, nurse, or counseling questions, you can e-mail us at contactpowell@conroeisd.net or call us at 936-709-1700. All staff e-mails are listed on our website.

REMOTE LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND RESOURCES
Below are activities and lessons for each grade level and Specials class for the week of March 23-27. The lessons are all optional. Choose the ones that best meet your child's needs.
Our incredible CISD Curriculum and Instruction Department built a parent resource webpage in 48 hours! This is to support your children as you see fit with recommendations for each grade level. It is a work in progress but an incredible resource to explore! I encourage all of you to spend some time on this site to know what's available from our district.
DYSLEXIA, SPECIAL EDUCATION, 504, GT, ELL AND OTHER SERVICES
Our teachers and staff that serve students that receive these specialized services are working closely with classroom teachers to support students through digital learning. We are also receiving guidance from our district coordinators and the Texas Education Agency. Our teachers will be reaching out to you to provide more information very soon.
GRADES AND REPORT CARDS
The 3rd grading period ended prior to spring break. We are still awaiting specifics on report cards, but we will update you as we know more. As for grades while we are remotely learning, we are not worried about that! We want to continue your child's love of learning and connection to Powell, and build on the foundation that we started.
MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
This week will be have morning announcements on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9am. The announcements will be broadcast from the homes of our Powell panthers. This is a way for us to connect with each other and have a little fun! If you are interested in hosting announcements from your house, sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0945A9AE23A75-announcements (We only have 10 spots open at this time.) Mrs. Collins, our librarian will provide you with all the details.
I want to again stress that our new normal is going to take some time to adjust to. Our biggest concern is your health and well being. Just do the best you can and reach out to our teachers and staff for help. We are here to serve you!
Give your sweet children a hug for us!
Take care,
Lisa
Message from Nurse Melissa
While schools are closed to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), please protect yourselves and others by following CDC recommendations. You can help protect your family from COVID-19 by practicing and promoting everyday healthy habits.
Practice social distancing to limit the spread of the virus. Social distancing is staying 3-6 feet from other people and not hugging or shaking hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you or your child is sick, stay at home and contact your healthcare provider.
Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Cover your cough or sneeze with the inside of your elbow or a tissue and throw the tissue in the trash.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Viruses are spread more easily with this type of contact.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a face mask, which does not recommend people who are well to wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
Please go to the following link for more in-depth information from the CDC:

If you are feeling ill, utilize this CDC online self-checker and they will assist you with how to proceed:

Conroe ISD Health Services has a General Health Information Call Line (936) 709-7791
Nurses will be answering calls Monday through Friday (8:00-3:00) to provide information from the CDC, DSHS, and other informational sources if you have any general questions or inquiries.
If you have any Powell clinic or student-specific questions, please feel free to reach out to me by email or leave me a phone message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Stay healthy!

Counselor's Corner
Dear Powell families,
We are experiencing changes like never before, but know that you are in our thoughts and we are here for you! Your children may have many questions and may have different behaviors because they are confused about our current situation.
If you or your child are having a difficult time under the circumstances that we are currently experiencing, please email me at snixon@conroeisd.net. I will be more than happy to assist you!
Much love,
S. Nixon
1. Be Available to Talk
Kids have big questions, and it’s okay to answer them. Take cues from your kids and offer clear, but concise answers in developmentally appropriate language. Keep the focus on what you are doing to prepare and prevention strategies that are within your control like proper handwashing and avoiding large crowds.
2. Limit News Exposure
Even when it seems like they’re not listening, kids pick up on what they hear on TV and radio. Newscasters’ tone of voice can be enough to set off alarm bells for kids, and unfamiliar words like pandemic and outbreak can be fear-inducing. Opt for watching or listening to news reports when kids are in bed or choose to read news articles if possible.
3. Stick to Routines and Boundaries
Kids thrive with routines and boundaries, and predictability can be very comforting in anxious times. When some things feel out of control, routines can give kids a sense of security. School-aged kids might be used to seeing a visual schedule in their classrooms, so try using one at all. Write your daily routine on a whiteboard or make a paper schedule together. And make sure you include fun activities in your daily routine! Play board games, play outside, or have silly dance parties.
4. Set & Track Daily Goals
Set small daily goals and track progress so kids can work toward something important to them! Make sure the goals are within their control. Set goals around how much they’ll read each day, how many free throws they’ll practice each day, or how many kind gestures they’ll show toward family members. Track progress on a goal chart so they can have a visual reminder of the progress they’re making!5. Practice Controlled Breathing
If your child is showing signs of worry, take a moment to practice breathing. You can simply count breaths for them (inhale 1 2 3 4 5 hold 1 2 3 4 exhale 1 2 3 4 5 6 7). Help them slow their breathing and really exhale all of the air to calm their bodies and minds.
6. It's okay to acknowledge you child's worry.
Acknowledging worry doesn't solidify it, it will help your child understand that it's a protective feeling that alerts us to a potential danger. Strategies (deep breathing, mindfulness, exercise, positive thoughts) will help them to keep their worries under control.
