President’s Address: Welcome Candace Vinson CTE Consultant at MDE

Welcome back to another school year! I have the pleasure this year of introducing the new Career and Technical Education (CTE) Consultant at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE): Candace Vinson. Candace is originally from Michigan and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Community Health and Kinesiology from Wayne State University (WSU). Upon completion of her bachelor's, she taught middle school PE for four years in Virginia Beach and Honolulu. After moving back to Michigan, she took a teaching job at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores teaching Health and PE. Upon district request to earn an FCS endorsement, Candace went back to school to earn an FCS certification (KH/VH) from Western Michigan University (WMU). Her love of teaching Child Development and Parenting led her to later earn another endorsement, her VG for Teacher Cadet from WSU. As if that weren’t enough, Candance also completed her Master's degree in Career and Technical Education from WMU and she is currently working on completion of her Doctorate in Educational Leadership through WMU. Her passion for Parenting Education and Teacher Education makes her a perfect fit for her new role at the Michigan Department of Education. There, she will be sitting on the department’s Family Engagement Committee and well as overseeing areas in CTE including General Education, Law and Public Safety, Hospitality and Tourism, and Government and Public Administration. We are lucky to have a former member of FCSEM and teacher of FCS at MDE.

Speaking of FCSEM, we have exciting volunteer opportunities for anyone who is interested. Please contact me if you would like to serve along with your colleagues from around Michigan in keeping FCS education alive and relevant in our state. Please send me a personal message via our Facebook page (Family and Consumer Science Educators of Michigan) if you are interested. Please also check out our Facebook page or fcsem.org for current job openings in FCS education, for upcoming conference information and for other resources.

Have a great start to the school year and I hope that I will see all of our members at the fall conference at Western Michigan University on November 8-9.

From your FCSEM President,

Anna Ribby
