The Weekly Howl
St. Francis Catholic School - Sunday, November 8th
Dear SFCS Parents and Friends,
I hope everyone who was able to attend the Pottery Jam this weekend had fun painting and visiting with each other! Thank you to Mrs. Sweeney and Mrs. Johnson for coordinating the Pottery Jam again this year. It was a particularly unique task this year and a lot of work coordinating this favorite activity for our community this year in keeping with our current guidelines.
We will be celebrating Veteran's Day a little differently this year. This year we will collecting leftover Halloween candy to be donated to the Operation Morale Support Charity that will use the candy to put in care packages to send to troops overseas. Students have until Tuesday to drop off their candy. If students reach our goal of collecting 180 lbs they will be awarded a Patriotic Spirit Wear Day on Veteran's Day (Wednesday). Thank you to all the students that have participated so far!!!
There is a lot of other information included in this week's Howl so make sure to scroll down to check it out.
Have a wonderful remainder to your weekend!
Sincerely in Christ,
Brian Pope

Prekindergarten
Kindergarten
1st Grade
The 1st graders had a busy week this week. They participated in a special election to elect their favorite Dr. Seuss character. They had to choose from the following candidates the Cat in the Hat, Horton, and the Lorax .The winner was the Cat in the Hat! They also learned about leaves changing color and did a leaf rubbing activity. The first graders also used their laptops to take their think central test. They are getting very good at using their laptops.
2nd Grade
3rd Grade PE
5th Grade
5th Grade is exploring the plant life cycle in Science. We can identify parts of seeds, types of plants, and pollination.
6th Grade Science
Sixth grade science is wrapping up our study of earthquakes and volcanoes. Students had fun using a slinky to model the movement of S and P waves during an earthquake. Groups worked together to generate waves and calculate wave speed. They came to understand that although S waves move slower, they also cause more damage because of the side to side shaking of buildings. The pictures show how S waves veered from side to side in the student models.
School Election
Congratulations Mrs. Brewster!!!
Congratulations to Mrs. Lesley Brewster, our 5th grade teacher, on being a recipient of the Bright Ideas Grant from Palmetto Electric!
Mrs. Brewster earned the grant for her "Seeing the World Through a Unique Lens" project which will provide her the funds to purchase document cameras for her class. The document cameras will allow Mrs. Brewster to foster collaboration with her students in sharing primary documents and independent work in the classroom both in-person and virtually. Great job Mrs. Brewster!
COVID-19 Request for the Holidays
Dear Families:
Despite all the challenges we have faced due to COVID-19, we have had, overall, a successful beginning of the year with in-class learning. This is due to you and your child(ren) following all the safety guidelines we put in place at the beginning of the academic year. We will continue to abide by our COVID procedures for the unforeseeable future.
As we move into the colder months and flu season, health officials say we may see a spike in COVID cases, so we want to reemphasize the importance of following safety protocols when you are out in the community. This includes wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, and regularly washing your hands. We also encourage you and your children to get a flu shot.
Finally, as you begin making your plans for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, we ask that you avoid traveling to COVID “hot spots.” If you do leave the area over the break, whether it is a short or long-distance trip, we ask that you continue to follow safety protocols. We need your assistance with this to prevent a COVID outbreak when we return to school after each of our holiday breaks.
For more information on COVID-19, please refer to the Centers for Disease Control COVID-19 website and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control website.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in keeping our school family safe and healthy. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
God Bless,
Brian Pope

Women of St. Francis Thank You to SFCS Families
The Families of St. Francis School
The Women of St. Francis are deeply appreciative and truly amazed at the generosity of our school families who chipped in with our Blanket Makers Committee to create baby, lap and full-length blankets for various charities that we support. With the quick departure of Terri Shannon, who was instrumental in leading this dedicated group of volunteers, I know she would like to thank all the school families who helped to bring a smile to those who benefited from their efforts. I received the remaining finished blankets from Terri before she moved to Virginia and from that excess, we were able to supply the Pregnancy Center and Clinic with 8 baby blankets. The Life Care Center received 8 lap blankets for which the director of patient care cried for joy when we delivered them. Operation Morale Support is very interested in receiving future blankets, either lap or full length and even pillows, so we are hoping for the same enthusiasm as last year to fulfill these requests!
The Blanket Makers would like to acknowledge the following families who participated and thank them for a job well done:
The Baroni family, the Bolchoz family, the Burckart family, the Camposano family, the Drescher family, the Johnson family, the Markey family, the Orlando family, the Perrine family, the Rozo family, the Shelton family, and the Sweeney family. Please let me know if I have missed any family that worked on these blankets. I only had the attached paperwork that was taped to the blankets I received and am sorry if I missed anyone and would love to acknowledge you in a subsequent letter.
Please know that you have brought great joy to all who received your works of art. God bless you and keep you safe this summer.

Parish Updates and Info
- Advent Candles and wreaths will be sold outside the Family Center and the Church this weekend. Candles are $5 a set and the wreaths are $10. Stop by and say hello to our Confirmation class of 2021.
- Please remember that the Church and Adoration Chapel will be closed on Monday, November 9th after the 11:30 a.m. for sanitizing. The Church and Chapel will reopen Tuesday for the 8:30 Mass.
- Upcoming - Thanksgiving Day Mass - 9 a.m.
- As the Church celebrated National Vocations Week Nov. 1-7, the Diocese would like to thank you for all the support you give the Office of Vocations. We currently have 22 wonderful seminarians studying for the priesthood in five different seminaries across the country. I am currently speaking with 14 men who are in discernment of applying to the diocese to become seminarians -- vocations are doing VERY well in our 200-year-old diocese! To celebrate, our office is extending Vocations Week to include the entire month of November. Parishioners may pray for our seminarians each day of November using our seminarian prayer card. They may also join the men on our Facebook Vocations group as they pray the Rosary live on Mondays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. Following the rosaries, viewers will have the opportunity to chat virtually with the seminarian and ask him questions. This is a great opportunity to get to know them and to pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood in the Diocese of Charleston. If you are interested in promoting our effort, please share our Facebook Vocations group on your website, bulletin, or on your parish Facebook page.
