CIS Weekly Update

#9: October 18-22

This week report cards will be coming home on Friday! We are proud of our students for working through the first quarter even with all of the quarantining that happened. Our students are resilient and we know they will continue to do great things throughout the school year.

This Wednesday we have Unity Day (wear orange) and picture retake day. Obviously, we don't expect our students who are participating in picture retakes to wear all orange. However, they can bring a change of clothes if they wish. Students will have the opportunity to retake their picture in the morning only (before 10:30am).

We have an exciting PTO winter fundraiser happening now! Families have the opportunity to purchase plants from Foertmeyer and Sons and students can earn prizes (see the catalog). PTO will also be sponsoring a prize for the top class in 5th & 6th grade. Thank you for your support.

Lastly, we are permitting students to dress up as a book character or in a costume on Friday, October 29. Please read down below for additional details.

Have a WONDERFUL week!!

Unity Day, Wednesday, October 20 - WEAR ORANGE

October is Bullying Prevention Month. To celebrate, students are encouraged to wear orange on Wednesday, October 20 for Unity Day! WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. Below is a video that highlights Unity Day.

Also, our counselors are sharing, on the morning announcements, helpful information about bullying and how to prevent it in our schools and community.

Character Dress Up/ Costume Day- Friday, October 29

Students are invited to dress up on Friday, October 29! Students can choose to be creative and dress up as their favorite book character or wear a costume from home. Students from each class, who dress up as a book character, could be nominated for contest at lunch. During lunch, students will get to vote on the most creative book character costume.

We ask that students not wear masks and not bring accessories that will need to be carried around. Students should also avoid any types of weapons or other inappropriate costumes for school.

We hope this brings some joy on Friday, October 29 and look forward to seeing our students in their costumes!

Please be sure to call Mrs. Lanham, our attendance clerk, prior to 2:45pm with any dismissal changes. We often have over 30 change of plans and it takes time to communicate with students and teachers. Sending an email isn't recommended. We prefer you call 330-335-1481. Thank You!

Dress For The Weather

Fall has arrived and so has the inconsistent weather. Some days are warm and some days are much cooler. It is important for our students to pay attention to the weather so they are dressed appropriately. This will be more important as the temperatures drop in the coming weeks. Thank you for your help!

The Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) has learned of a new October social media challenge that impacts Ohio schools and, specifically, staff and educators. Some TikTok users have devised a monthly list that includes various pranks or “challenges” to take place at school. For example, in recent weeks, there have been incidents of school vandalism as part of the "devious lick" challenge. The challenge encourages students to slap a teacher or staff member and run before being caught committing the assault. The incident must be also be filmed or the challenge does not “count.”

Unfortunately there are TikTok challenges for other months. I've attached a picture of a list of other possible TikTok challenges. If these challenges make their way into our school then we will be forced to hold students accountable for their actions that break our school code of conduct. Please talk to your child(ren) if you feel it is necessary. THANK YOU!

Effective October 1, the following change will be made to the quarantine guidelines followed by schools in Medina County (the rest of the flow chart remains unchanged):

If a student meets the criteria of a close contact from exposure in a school setting and the student is not fully vaccinated or was not wearing a face covering during the period of exposure, the student will be permitted to stay in school if the student wears a face covering during the quarantine period (provided the student continues to be symptom free). This change only impacts the ability of a student to attend school, it does not apply to extracurricular activities or other situations that are not school-related.
