Weddington Middle School Newsletter

Notes from the Principal
Dear Parents,
There is A LOT going on again! Thanks so much to our beloved PTSO for the Thanksgiving pies. I can speak for myself and tell you that yesterday’s final bite of that uniquely American apple pie was delicious! It’s an incredibly kind gesture, and an easily referenced, tangible symbol of the lengths this community will go to support its schools. So THANK YOU!
The 6/7 WMS Band brought us seasonal cheer on Tuesday night, and kudos to Maestro Mekel Rogers and that entire group of students: the concert proved just the inspiration I needed to move on from the Thanksgiving break and into this last run prior to winter break…and what a run it will be! Look out for news about our Spelling Bee winners come this Tuesday, December 10, and our Loose Change Drive will continue through Thursday, December 12. This drive to support our friends over at Walter Bickett Elementary School is an awesome, longstanding partnership between schools, and our student leaders will use your funds to help bring a bright and merry holiday to some of those students and families. Having evolved far beyond its “Loose Change” title, you may directly support the endeavor here: https://www.wmsptso.org/event-info/walter-bickett-loose-change-drive-2.
December 10 also returns home basketball to WMS: join us against Porter Ridge at home Tuesday, and then we’re away to Sun Valley next Thursday evening. On Wednesday and Thursday during school, our 7th Grade Social Studies classes head to the JCC to check out the Butterfly Project (https://www.charlottejcc.org/webpage-directory/butterfly-project/levine-jcc-butterfly-project/), while our 7th Grade Science classes check out campus life at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. We’ll repeat these trips come spring.
We’re gearing up for another Club Day on Friday the 13th, and students throughout our school will participate in coding and other activities throughout the week to highlight Computer Education Week. Also on Friday, we’re hosting a Coffee with the Counselors! At 10:30am in our Media Center, our counselors are available primarily to field questions about Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (https://www.ucps.k12.nc.us/Page/5702). An opportunity for the most advanced students to accelerate their learning by demonstrating mastery prior to even taking a course, the window for applications closes December 20. CDM is not appropriate for most students, but our counselors are available to help you navigate the decision-making if you think this path might suit your child.
It's an abundance of activity, but that’s nothing new! Happy Friday, and we wish each of you a wonderful weekend!

Absence/Early Dismissal
Parents, if your child will be leaving school early, please send a note to the homeroom teacher with the dismissal time. Students who leave before or arrive after 12:15 pm will be marked absent for the day. There are no dismissals allowed after 3:30 pm. If you send a note for your student to be in the office at 3:30 pm and you arrive after the 3:30 pm deadline, if your student is not in the office waiting for you the office staff will not call your student out of class. Also, all early dismissal and late arrivals from medical appointments must have a note from the doctor in order to be excused.
When students are absent it is not necessary to call the school. Be sure to send a note to the homeroom teacher stating why the student was not in school. UCPS will notify you through Connect-Ed if your student was
absent.
