Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Steffens
May 2023
Dear Poinciana Families,
This edition of the Steffens Skills Show news is going to be a little different this month. I’d like to let you all know that I am retiring at the end of this school year. I have been an educator and school counselor in Collier County since 1992 and 5 years before that in Massachusetts (35 years total!)
It has been my honor to work at this amazing school for the last 28 ½ years. We have the very best students, staff, and community. You have all been my second family, so much so, that I now have the second generation of students!
Thank you for standing by me, supporting me, sharing your children with me, and letting me take care of them. I will always hold a special place in my heart for my Poinciana Pelicans, big and small.
With love and kindness,
Mrs. Denise Steffens
Poinciana School Counselor
A Note from Mrs. Ferro
Hello Poinciana Families!
State and District Assessments for students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade continue through May 24. It is crucial that students attend school on time every day by 8:20 am, eat a healthy breakfast (breakfast is FREE!), and get a good night's sleep. In addition, please make sure that doctor's appointments are scheduled after 2:50 pm if possible. In the event your child is sick on the day of the assessment, such as has vomiting or fever, please keep them home to rest. Remember that students must be fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication in order to return to school. Students will be able to make-up the assessment during the make-up testing window. However, if a student leaves in the middle of the assessment, he/she will not be allowed to finish it on another day once the test has begun. All assessments are required to be completed in the same school day. If your child is late to school on the day of their scheduled state assessment, he/she will need to take it at a different time and/or day.
Please keep in mind that we will follow CLOSED CAMPUS procedures during state-wide testing. This means that parents and visitors are prohibited from being on campus, including to have lunch with students.
If you have any questions regarding testing, please feel free to call 377-8102 or email me at ferroma@collierschools.com.
We are confident that our Pelicans will shine as they always do!
Thank you for your understanding and support as we CREATE, CAPTIVATE, and CELEBRATE learning each and every day!
PELICANS are the BEST!

See What's Happening in 2nd Grade!
On March 31st, our second grade Pelicans learned so much about giraffes through ZooCon. One of the students in Ms. Ashley’s class was selected to read her question live! We are grateful to the Naples Zoo and CCPS for providing us with these wonderful opportunities.
During the month of May, second grade students will be finishing up the year strong fine tuning all of their skills. In Language Arts, we will be immersed in Module 10, this unit focuses on how we can learn about various cultures and their traditions. Readers will focus on identifying and explain the theme within various types of text, while focusing on utilizing story elements to determine the central idea and plots within various types of literature. In Writing, students will compose an expository essay.
In Math, we will be reviewing this year’s content and improving our addition and subtraction fluency in order to create a strong math foundation for 3rd Grade.
In Science, we will be finishing our unit of study with solar energy.
Wait till you see what we cook up in our own solar ovens! In Social Studies, we will wrap up our Economics Unit by learning about Supply and Demand and how our own wants and needs can affect our saving and spending habits.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures Reminder
Arrival Procedures
PES doors are opened at 7:45 a.m. The earliest time for a student to be dropped off is 7:45 am. This is extremely important, if your child is dropped off earlier, there is not any supervision. Supervision begins at 7:45 a.m.to guarantee that every student is safe. Please use the front (east side) of the school by the flag poles when dropping off your child in the mornings. The tardy bell rings at 8:25 a.m. It is critical that all students are in their classrooms ready for the day’s instruction by this time.
Dismissal Procedures
Students are dismissed from their classrooms at 2:50 p.m. Our dedicated teachers definitely maximize the instructional time throughout the day. They teach right to the dismissal bell. When a student leaves early, they are missing a vital part of their education.
