Wicked by Sara Shepard

Life Lesson
A life lesson in the book Wicked is to always keep calm in dangerous situations and never let someone or something control your life. In the book, Spencer starts to panic when she finds out that she isn't in her grandmothers will. “There it was. Nana had left two million dollars to Smithson Pierpont Hastings, Jonathan Barnard Hastings, and Melissa Josephine Hastings. Spencer’s name was nowhere to be found...Spencer listened to her breathing for a few moments, and then, suppressing a sob, she wheeled around, sprinted to her car, gunned the ignition, and peeled out of the parking lot.” (Shepard 79). She lets this really get to her and it isn't good to pile up on top of everything else she's going through and she shouldn't have let it gotten to her that bad. Also in the book, Hanna lets her step-sister get to her every last nerve and it drives her crazy. “Hanna sucked her teeth. Way to sell me out, Dad. Hd her father forgotten that Kate has stabbed Hanna in the back at their disastrous dinner at Le Bec-Fin in Philadelphia this fall-the dinner that was supposed to be for Hanna and her dad only? But then, her dad hadn't seen it that way. In his mind, Kate wasn't a backstabber. She was perfect.” (Shepard 28). In life there are always going to be people that seem better than you but you shouldn't let it get to you like Hanna did because it just digs and digs at you. Another time in the book, Hanna encounters some girls that she hates and they attack her by hinting about her eating disorder and Hanna gets really hurt by it. “But once she was safe amid the throng of people streaming out of the cafeteria, her composure crumpled. Friends-free diet. Friends purge.” (Shepard 58). Hanna is very sensitive about her eating disorder and so when the girls say something about it she gets very upset. In life people are going to attack you about things that are most sensitive to you and even though it may hurt, you shouldn't let it get to you deeply. Be strong and take control in your life, you should never let anyone hold you back from doing things in life.
Song: Secret by The Pierces
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead…
Why do you smile
Like you have told a secret
Now you're telling lies
Cause you're the one to keep it
But no one keeps a secret
No one keeps a secret
Why when we do our darkest deeds
Do we tell?
They burn in our brains
Become a living hell
Cause everyone tells
Everyone tells…
Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead…
Look into my eyes
Now you're getting sleepy
Are you hypnotized
By secrets that you're keeping?
I know what you're keeping
I know what you're keeping
Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead…
[spoken]
Alison?
Yes, Katherine.
I have something I want to tell you, but
you have to promise to never tell anyone.
I promise
Do you swear on your life?
I swear on my life
[end spoken]
You swore you'd never tell…
You swore you'd never tell…
You swore you'd never tell…
You swore you'd never tell…
Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead…
(chorus x 3)
Yes two can keep a secret
If one of us is…. Dead.
Song Life Lesson
In this song it says, “If I show you then I know you, Won't tell what I said, Cause two can keep a secret, If one of them is dead.” This basically is saying they know that another person can keep the secret if they are dead. Its like a threat. In another part in the song it says how they know what secrets you’re keeping and are you hypnotized by keeping them. “Look into my eyes, Now you're getting sleepy, Are you hypnotized, By secrets that you're keeping?, I know what you're keeping.” This whole song is perfect for this book because its about keeping a secret between two people and how easy it is if one of them is dead and this relates to the book because Ali’s alleged killer who has many secrets dies in the end.
