What's Brewing at WPES!
February, 2018
From the Principal's Desk
We are so excited to share with you all of the wonderful things we've been doing this past month! From building longhouses to experiencing a Google Expedition into the digestive system, our students have been exploring everything around them. We held our first half of the year Enrichment Share, hosted Veterans in a moving Valentine's Assembly, and celebrated 100 days of school! This, with an infusion of reading at every turn, has our students thinking critically, sharing ideas, and growing by leaps and bounds.

100 Jumping Jacks!
100 Jogging Steps!
100 Exercises with Mrs. Herr!
Kindergarten Art Studio
In the Art Studio with Mrs. Sipowicz, Kindergartners have been experimenting with wood! After a unit on what it means to be 3-D using clay and paper, the kindergartners have moved to making wood sculptures. They had a few classes to explore a variety of wooden pieces and build as a table team. We learned a lot about balance, length, width, height and of course working together! Last week each child had the opportunity to build their own 3-D wooden sculpture with tacky glue. It was so fun to see all the different creations! Next week we will create observational drawings of our sculptures, make color plan and paint them! So exciting!
2nd Graders Share with 4th Grade Buddies!
The second graders spent the past few months reading nonfiction! They learned how to use all of the features of nonfiction books to grow knowledge. They became “experts” on a topic of their choice. The students were all very enthusiastic about this unit. Mrs. Fieberg and Mrs. Kuwata were so happy to see many students take the initiative to seek out extra books on their topic from the library. We celebrated the end of this wonderful work by creating a “museum”. We invited our fourth grade buddies to visit our exhibits and listen to the experts talk about their topics!
3rd Graders Learn about the Government!
Third grade students studied the government of the United States of America as well as
basic economic concepts. The children enjoyed a ‘reading carousel’ activity whereby
they read about the different branches of the U.S. government and discussed important
information learned. One small detail…the story is told through the perspective of mice-
as if the mice were the members of the Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and
Judicial Branch! Squeekers!!!
Additionally, as part of the economics study, the students took part in a reader’s theatre
presentation. The topic was supply and demand. Did you know that the orange juice we
drink in New York can be effected by the climate in Florida? Ask a 3rd grader to tell you
more!
4th Graders go on an Expedition!
4th graders launched into learning about the Digestive System through an interactive experience with the Google Expedition Goggles. The children were introduced to vocabulary and major organs as they followed a raspberry from the mouth to the end of the digestive system through an interactive viewing experience.
4th Grade Iroquois Projects
5th Graders
Students enjoyed a day of reading in their classrooms to show their LOVE of reading and to help raise funds for end-of-the-year celebratory events. Many reading adventures were enjoyed by the students!
Endeavor Farm and Valentine's Day!
The students in Mrs. Price’s class have been busy! We visited our friends from Endeavor Horse Farm and delivered hand written Valentines to our horses. We used this opportunity to spread kindness and show our love for our partners in learning!
We also worked hard on our life cycle projects with Mrs. Keenan’s class, our work is displayed in the hallway!
