All It Takes Is One Person
Dear Cougar Family,
I had the privilege of attending the Texas Teacher of the Year Award Ceremony last Friday along with Sheridan Clinkscales who represented Region VI, CSISD, and our magnificent school at the event. I wish I had the foresight to attempt to record the speeches that day--from Commissioner Mike Morath to last year's Texas TOTY to the videos of the 6 finalists--the event was incredibly inspirational.
Tara Bordeaux, an AVP teacher from Lanier High School in Austin ISD will represent our great state in the national competition. Her story shows that all it takes is one person to change the course of a struggling student's journey. Click here to read the entire article from the Austin American Statesman. The text below is excerpted from her speech upon winning the Texas Teacher of the Year:
“When I was a junior in high school, I didn’t think anyone saw me and I certainly didn’t feel loved. I was THAT student that we all talk about. I was that kid that didn’t even know where I might end up the next day and I dropped out of school.
But one person saw me.
And that was my chemistry teacher Ms. Canon. What I want everyone to know is that amazing woman who saved my life is right here in this room today. I don’t need to tell any of you guys how to go on to be great teachers or anything because you already are and you already know. But what I do want to make sure of is that 24 years later, I can tell Ms. Canon thank you. I might not have gone back to school and maybe I made a lot of mistakes but the one thing that went with me for my entire life is the words you spoke to me was that I was somebody and that I meant something to you.
So if it takes your kids 24 years to say thank you, please keep teaching for them because I guarantee you, you are doing way more than you will ever realize with these kids because one day that kid might be up here or be the doctor who is being recognized for the neurosurgical procedure of the year or whatever it is. But that kid is going to be up here because of you. Keep doing what you do because I’m honored to be in the room with all of you today.”
Whether you are in the 4th week or 40th year of your teaching career, what you do matters. You impact lives every single day. While we do not hear it often enough in this profession, I'd like to take Tara's inspiration to say thank you to all of you.
Thank you, and have a phenomenal week on the journey! And, as always, COUGAR PRIDE!
Tiffany
P.S. Also, please take a moment to share the fire drill expectations video in your advocate classes. It would probably be a good idea to go over our expectations with your 3rd period as well.

Education Foundation Grants
Dear CSISD Teachers and Staff,
Applications for Innovative Teaching Grants from the Education Foundation
are now open! This year we have adopted a new software system, SmarterSelect, to help
everyone involved navigate the grant application process better.
You will need to create a username and password before accessing the application. You can start by going to our website HERE.
All grant applications are DUE October 4th with grant award winners being notified during Grant Patrol on November 9th. Please remember that some grants will need approval from Technology and Facilities.
And, every grant will need approval from your principal before your application is finalized. So don't wait until the last minute to get started!
If you have any questions, please contact us at givetokids@csisd.org.
Content Mastery
Content Mastery & Credit Recovery have been combined this year due to staffing and space constraints. Please keep this in mind when you are sending students to CM.
Remember that ANY student is able to receive help in content mastery. Teachers can start sending students down to room 1048 after instruction (with a Content Mastery pass). Please send any supplemental aides or resources students may need to complete an assignment with them when they come along with a completed CM pass.
Questions? See/email Coach Walsh.
