Counselor's Corner - SPARKS

“The greatest gift parents can give their children is to help them discover their purpose and passion”, states Peter Benson a leading authority on childhood and adolescence and the author of Sparks. This can be an overwhelming challenge in today’s difficult world. Over the past 2 years, school counselors from all building levels in CBSD have developed a K-12 Guidance Plan. Brainstorming, stake-holder involvement, creative planning, goal setting and implementation continue to be part of this. The Plan includes what is currently part of our academic, social/emotional guidance curriculum and in this evolving process we will try to meet the variety of needs of our students and school community. We invite you to share in our continued learning on how to inspire passion and purpose. Articles, videos, and documents will be shared in your school newsletter on a regular basis. Look for the SPARKS picture like the one above. We hope you find this information beneficial to you and your family. We appreciate your time and involvement in the education of all our students.

For comments or questions, please contact Ginny Barrett at vbarrett@cbsd.org.

Social Emotional Learning

Throughout the year, your child will be provided Home Links that go with several of the Second Step lessons. Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows - please review these online resources.

In order to access, parents and guardians of students in grades K-5 can go to the website, www.secondstep.org, create an account, and then enter the activation code below for the grade level your child is enrolled in. For parents and guardians of sixth graders, please access the website, www.parenteenconnect.org. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills that lead to success in school and in life.

Grand Friends at New Seasons

The Butler community, in conjunction with our 40 Assets initiatives, is continuing the tradition of creating cards for our Grand Friends from the New Seasons personal care facility in New Britain. We are asking students to create a holiday card or two with artwork and a generic message (Dear Grand Friend and a wish for a happy holiday). Please sign the cards with only first name and perhaps last initial (no full names). Cards can be placed in the Grand Friend box in front of the Butler main office by December 18th. The students have really enjoyed making these cards in the past and our Grand Friends are so thankful to receive them.

School Happenings

World Kindness Day - November 13

World Kindness Day is a global day that promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world. This day, celebrated on November 13 of each year, has the purpose is to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together. At Butler, we wore yellow as a reminder to be "Kind Like Joey".

Butler Celebrates Veterans and Our Deployed Military!

The Butler Veteran's Day Ceremony is a time-honored tradition for our school - which was recognized throughout the week of November 11th. The school coordinated a Letter and Candy Collection for our families to share with local vets. Our classrooms took time to honor in special ways, including slide shows shared with extended families, special "Virtual Visits" from family loved-ones who were in the military and "Sweat for a Vet" exercises. Thank you to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms!

Butler Picture Day(s)

Butler Elementary planned two-full days of classroom photographs for students this week, for Monday and Thursday. This schedule allowed both of our Hybrid groups the opportunity to receive their photos from school when in attendance. Our virtual online students are encouraged to set-up an appointment with C&C Studios for a private sitting. Thanks to C&C for a "seamless" picture day at Butler!

Emergency Planning and Preparations - Opening Fire Drills

With Butler returning back to in-person instruction at the end of October, students and staff focused upon the first week of learning new routines and expectations. This includes a review of our safety and security plan for Emergency Preparations. Each month, student practice fire drills - and with two of three modes in schools, we are completing "Fire Drill Days" for grade levels to practice our plan if we were ever to have a fire in the building. Our traditional and both sets of Hybrid students have worked on their plan for safety - which included hearing the new fire alarm with voice commands - a feature of our renovation!

November 3 - Election Day at Butler!

Election Day is the annual event established by law providing the right for American Citizens to elect our governing officials. This year, Election Day November 3rd saw many community members coming to Butler to vote for President (and other positions) - as it is the polling location for two local voting districts. Our Gym and Cafeteria were separated for local residents to cast their vote - and it was a very busy day. Students remained home across the District to hold a day for virtual learning. Butler classrooms had the opportunity to learn about the electoral college and election process in the days leading up to the vote.
